Ibex Hunt New Mexico

The over the counter Ibex tags in New Mexico is that a very good hunt or is it a tough hunt or just no trophy's?

Not that great of a tag unless you have a landowner or outfitter lined up. It gets pricey...I've looked into it already. It will cost usually 3000 to 5000 dollars.

The problem is getting a tag and then finding a land owner to let you on his property.

White sands do have some hunts, and again drawing a permit...only to find you have to shoot the first one spotted. Old, young, and anything in between.

I have found it is cheaper with less hassle to fly to Africa and go hunting than it is to do so in NM.

Unless you have the $$$ to hunt NM.

I've been trying to draw a Siberian Ibex tag in New Mexico for several years.
If or when I'm successful in drawing one of the few tags available I'll definitely be using a guide service experienced in hunting the Florida Mountains.
I think all things considered, cost of non-resident tag approx $1600 and guide services 3K to 5K it would be cheaper for me (in the US) to hunt free ranging Ibex in New Mexico than make the trip to Siberia,Afghanistan, China etc.
Of course New Mexico isn't Siberia, China,Afghanistan etc. but, the terrain the Ibex inhabit in the Florida Mountains is tough country and I plan on being in "sheep shape" .
Just need to keep my fingers crossed I draw in the next go round.

Oops ! My mistake.
Not Siberian Ibex (although they did once inhabit the Florida Mnts) but,Bezoar/Persian/Turkish Ibex. Also known as Pasang in Iran

So, strike China,Afghanistan,Siberia..... and add Crete,Turkey,Iran and Pakistan.

I still say go for it. LOL!

The archery tag is easy to draw. The muzzleloader is next....The rifle very hard. I have put in for years too, have not drawn, now that you have to buy a New Mexico hunting license before applying. I doubt, I'll put in.

Jesse Rankin use to advertise hunts for ibex hunts, that were off public land. The ibex escaped to private property and the New Mexico Fish and Game didn't want them to expand, so another type of permit was issued. I tried looking these hunts up on the web, but didn't have any success.

I agree the public land tag was a terrific draw tag....just bad odds.

You can't draw if you don't apply. They are tough tags to draw due to the limited number available. I wouldn't waste my money on an over the counter license. There are a few animals outside of the Florida Mnt. hunt area but very few. You could spend alot of time looking and never see one. The Hunting license that you must buy before you can apply is $65 for nonresidents and $15 For residents and you must pay the license fee upfront when you apply. If you don't draw you get the license fee ($1,610 nonresident) back minus the processing fee that they charge. You also can elect to get the Hunting license cost back if you are unsuccessful. I live within an hour of the Florida Mtn. hunt area and have a couple of friends who have been lucky enough to draw rifle tags, both killed respectable billies. There is an outfitter named Dennis Kauffman that lives near the unit and his clients are quite successful in harvesting big billies. If you do get lucky and draw a tag be prepared to be in excellent shape if you want to get to where the big boys are. the mountain is extremely steep and trecherous. There have been people that have killed and been unable to retrieve their goat because of where it ended up. Good luck, don't give up on the draw we all get lucky once in a while.

Maybe I misunderstand you. If you hunt and are unsuccessful you can get your money back, really?

No, no , no ! only if you are unsuccessful in DRAWING A TAG. You have to buy a Game hunting tag before you can apply, that is $65 for nonresidents then it will cost you $1610 to apply for the Ibex tag and that has to be paid in full when you apply. If you are unsuccessful in the draw you get everything back except the processing fee that they charge which is $10-12 I think for nonresidents. They will keep your money for several months if you are unsuccessful in the draw so don't expect it back immediately.
