Wolves, especially in Canada, can get extremely large. This may be rare in size but this shows why/how wolves are capable of killing moose, domestic cattle, elk, etc. Idaho is about to become overrun with wolves, Montana has problems in the western regions of the state and Wyoming is being hit hard with them as well! I hope the US Congress will get the law changed to remove the gray wolf from the ESA so that the states can begin to manage the wolf populations!
Folks, this is a very serious issue here in the US and something needs to be done about it. Those members who live in the US, please write your congressman and ask them to support H.R. 6028!!!

H.R 6028? Is that some bill to take the Gray Wolf off of the endangered species list? If so, I support it! It is time to take action against these Wolves before they destroy our Elk populations! I want to go Elk hunting and I want there to be Elk when I do go! Me & my .270 Win. want something to shoot at!

Christian - it is the first step in amending the ESA to remove the gray wolf as endangered. It isn't!! They were brought in from Canada and the gray wolf is nowhere near extinction as they are all over Canada and Alaska.

I'm a lifelong hunter and Idaho native and have witnessed firsthand the effect the wolves are having on big game, especially elk. Like most issues, the real truth of the matter is somewhere in the middle. Don't believe people that say the wolves have killed everything. Also, don't believe the people who say their effect is minimal.
In actuality, there is no denying that they're killing a tremendous number of game animals. In Idaho, the "surplus" or "extra" animals in a herd have traditionally been allocated to hunters per long established conservation principles. Now, the surplus is gone, and hunting opportunities are being lost, even if tag quotas haven't been severely restricted yet. Elk behavior in areas with high wolf numbers is changing. Hunting strategies which worked in the past might not now, even if actual elk numbers in that area remain reasonably good. In some areas, elk numbers have taken a huge hit.
Mostly, this is a case of ignorant people who live outside of the western US projecting their ideas of wolf management on the western states. The politics involved are 100 times more powerful than the actual science behind it. Every reasonable assesment of wolf numbers show that they are spreading and reproducing faster than was predicted. Wolves need to be managed, just like any other predator or big game species. To not allow our local fish & wildlife agencies the ability to do this severely limits their ability to manage the other animal populations. This is one more case of the feds issuing a government mandate while restricting the state's ability to deal with the unintended consequences of that mandate.
I live and work in an area where ranchers and sportsmen make up the majority of the population and a huge part of the local economy. The general feeling around here is that we eliminated wolves the first time for a reason and the reasons are still valid.
