    Default Hunting in Liberia

Information sent to me by Steve Kobrine from Steve Kobrine Safaris (www.stevekobrine.com) which he wanted me too share on AH!

Good news! As you know I have been involved in Liberia for nearly three years and now I have finally secured legal hunting rites on a 57,000 hectare area. We will be hunting Zebra Duiker, Water Chevrotain, Western Bongo (recently reclassified by SCI), Ogilbys duiker, Black Duiker, Bay Duiker, Dwarf Forest Buffalo, Giant Forest Hog, Red River Hog, Civet, Genet, and Golden cat. I have a quota for all of these species and all of them can be found in my hunting area.

I recently shot a Water Chevrotain with my bow and got all the export documents and shipped it to the US and it cleared with no problem so trophy export will not be a problem.

The rainy season runs from June till November but I am setting up clients throughout the year and will be hunting both rainy and dry seasons.

I have been able to access a remote area of the jungle which seems to be game rich- we have even found fresh pygmy hippo tracks on the river next to camp. Hopefully this sustainable hunting project will benefit all the unique animals in this area.

I fly back to Liberia in a couple weeks to expand the facilities in Camp and will be building wooden bungalows with flush toilets and showers and even air conditioning. The hunt is a physical one and requires hours of walking in hot and humid jungle. To get these species you have to be able to walk at least 5 kilometers per day and the farther a hunter can walk the better his chances. These are incredible species which have not been hunted in years so it will be very exciting to develop this destination. If you need any more info let me know.

    No "Bakkie Buckaroos" in Liberia!?

5Km in the Jungle with humidity.
Sounds like 20Km on the flats in sand and for tall guys like me that should translate into 20Km with jumping jacks thrown in.

    Interesting opportunity.

Do you have pictures of all these alien (to me) species?

For my edification, what is the difference in a Western Bongo and a "Common" Bongo?

    Ah the Bongo...very complicated species

The Western Bongo eats cheese, drinks wine and spends a lot of time at the beach while the Common Bongo lives in a trailer somewhere in Oklahoma

    Clear enough?

I'll have to share some cheese and wine in the jungle and avoid the Tornados!
