Africa & Camo

I was reading another post where a guy asked about a ghille suit, it was the general consensus that its unnecessary and that camo would be fine.

My question is, do you guys recommend camo? If so what patterns? Our camo here in the US is very leafy and green or dark to represent shadows.

OR do you guys feel a khaki shirt is enough to get you close?

Attention to the animals sight line is far more important than what you wear. Khaki, tan, brown, pretty much any reasonable cloth will work fine if you keep to the shadows and use the natural cover to your advantage.

Any Good Camo should be fine as the brush and grass will help breakup your breakup pattern however to make things easy earth tone colors I have found are preferred world wide and in some countrys that is all that is allowed.

How's your camo working for you when the guys standing beside you:

Your PH is wearing light tan pants.

Farm worker wearing a bright blue set of coveralls.

I used some camo but realized it was not that big an issue so I also wore my Springboks jersey.

Agreed, and same thing for scent control. You can practise it all you want, but if you're tracker hasn't taken a bath in weeks, why bother?

not to mention the white hat!

camo is illegal in certain countries in africa as well as other parts of the world, as a friend found out when she had to change out of her camo bikini in a hurry!

I would stick with basic earth tone colors. I particularly favor the dark olive drab green. I've never been a big fan of camo at home or abroad to be honest with you.

..no, you should definitly consider some underpants, khaki trousers, khaki coloured socks and boots as well..!

I agree with Doc above...there are lots of thorns and brush around and that could be a problem...

I am going to bring a thin leaf suit for my spot and stalk with my bow.

Another good place to look for safari gear is Long Grass in Texas Safari Gear and Trip Planning for Safari they have some pretty good sales and some fine shooting stick give them a look.

I have worn a tan realtree pattern and it works fine.

I would not recommend any military camo in Africa.

Cammo is pointless unless you also disguise your face, hands, rifle and those around you. The biggest give away is movement and no amount of cammo stops that from being seen.

Just wear grey or dark blue work clothes that offer protection from sun and thorns.

Speaking from experience here in the States...You have got to evaluate your game as well. For example, I hunt deer (whitetail)-Scent control is more critical than camo, realistically. I do wear a ghillie suit, but have had deer walk within 3 feet of me due to scent precautions. Turkey on the other hand, are sharp of eye, and one must nearly always bush out every item they own to keep from being seen. If you hunt in a tree or on high ground, and your animal has a nose...best be scentless before invisible to the eye. Battle dress uniform type clothing does have an advantage-POCKETS, and generally easy ones to get to.

Oh, dang. Well...It's all about the outlines! I have hunted birds kilted and in tweed before, and after successful kills, nobody laughed!

Its not about the pattern of the camo, but how you make the camo work for you, like standing in the shade, slightly covered by brush, breaking your outer lines etc.

But if you want a print that is close to our local camo, Realtree AP Green is about as close as it gets, and also what I use.
