Default A little Ruger Feedback Please

First, let me preface by saying that I have been told by people in a position to know that I need another firearm like I need another A......e

    Stipulating to that, here goes:

Long story short, man dies, has guns, widow doesn't hunt small town no children.

416 Rigby, Ruger, as new condition. Doesn't look like it has been shot enough to blow all the new out of the bore.

I have a CZ 550 in this caliber and am quite happy however, I cannot decide whether this gun would be an upgrade, downgrade or just a lateral move. Opinions?

Being not completely mercenary, I would have a little trouble making the purchase and then turning around and selling it for a handsome profit. So, if I close I probably will need to hang on to it for a bit.

That there, as they say in West Texas, is tha deal.

Please don't spend a lot of time in naval contemplation, not to sound too morbid, but I would like to close at the funeral.

Well Second Wind, I guess it comes down to pretty much one thing. Do you want them? If the answer is yes, then there is really no issue. Ruger are pretty decent guns as you probably know. If you ever go on a DG hunt then this gun would make a pretty good spare gun in the event of a problem with your CZ.

A Ruger is a sound rifle, however you did not say how old the rifle is What work will need to be accomplished to make it a shooter for you. Have you had a chance to look the rifle over and see if you will need to do a trigger job and bed the action and barrel.

Even with that depending on price it should be a sound investment.

Need should not be a criteria unless you cannot afford it. Otherwise if you want it buy it. Recent made Rugers of any description are fine rifles. Pretty hard to go wrong. I dont believe its any better than your CZ but is as good. All depends on the cost of it.

If it's a great price buy it, you can always part with it later on!

I consider it to be more of a lateral move, but by having 2, you will have a great spare gun in case sh*t happens close to or during a hunt

Closed the deal. Price was right and the rifle was in like new condition. Based on the paperwork that was with it I make the Mfg date to be some 5 - 6 years ago but I haven't run the serial number yet.

Action is reasonable but nothing to write home about, trigger, while not objectionable is just about what you would expect from Ruger. So, a little smith-work and I think it'll do. Shoots good enough but for some reason the recoil seems a bit more than the CZ, no accounting for that (?) I like the gun and I think it will grow on me.

The deal was pretty much "right" but the widow threw in a little pistol her husband kept in his desk. I was going to make it into a key chain until I had it appraised . . . . an original 1906 Colt Vest Pocket Pistol in .25 ACP apparently holds a bit more charm for some than I would have expected.

Looks like you dont need my "help". I was going to suggest that to avoid turmoil on the home front you could buy the gun and I would hold onto it for you as long as you needed (forever if need be). That way everyone would be happy!!! LOL

I use a Ruger RSM, and have owned it side by side with the CZ as well. I ended up selling the CZ, and use the Ruger for all my big game hunting these days. Both are good, I just liked my Ruger better than the CZ, I'm really a fan of that integral sight rib and I much prefer the Ruger's safety for hunting. It also mounts optics better than the CZ (lower) if optics are your preferred sighting method, and I prefer the RSM's iron sights to my former CZ's.
