Hunting Kenya
Has anyone ever hunted in Kenya - I have the opportunity to visit this country with my brother in law and wasn't sure about hunting opportunities for this country. I have done some research, but have come up with very little information about outfitters and game in this part of Africa.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Derek,
Hunting was banned in Kenya in the 1970's. There is no commercial hunting in the Country. As such, the wildlife outside the parks is severely limited. I lived in Nairobi a summer (1999). Took several road trips and saw very little wildlife outside the game parks. It would be better for you to look down into Tanzania or even Uganda if you want an East African hunting experience.Tom

hunting was stopped in 1977 and has never reopened. a trial hunting programme nearly got started 5 or so years ago , but after getting through parliament the president used his veto to stop it. i think there might be bird shooting but thats it. if farmers/ranchers have a problem with wildlife they have to contact the game dept to sort it out. so unfortunately you are 30+ years too late.

Thank You
Thank you all for responding - I had no clue, but I am very disappointed - hope this does not spread to other parts of Africa.
Jerome - Thank you for the articles and the information - great historical review.
Any idea if this is going to spread to other parts of Africa? What led up to this happening in Kenya - any one event other than the poaching and the decline of animals.

Very interesting information, Jerome. The article "Hunting in Kenya at 17" made me regret being born so much too late (OMG, but their shooting was atrocious!). "Can Kenya truly benefit from trophy hunting?" proved a point that everyone on this site is aware of, but unfortunately is ignored constantly in the bunny-hugging general population: if an animal is not profitable and collides with humans, outside parks it will be eradicated, and in the parks it will be poached. Maybe we should use Kenya as a bad example in public forums!
Overkill is underestimated!

Kenya is a excellent example of what happens when you give in to the animal rights people....you have less animals and less diversity of animals, poaching becomes terrible, and less income coming into your country for starters. Its a darn shame....Botswana is becoming more and more like Kenya

derek it was basically down to the fact that certain family members very closely related to the top politicians, and i mean the top were running the poaching. they were making a lot of money, but without people in the hunting blocks they could clean up, which they did in both a monetary way and also by destroying the wildlife. they had the power to close hunting literaly overnight which is what they did. the safaris in the field had to finish there and then, and people arriving in the country looking foreward to their hunt were told sorry its not going to happen.

Hi,yes i'm afraid hunting is banned in Kenya.I had an uncle who hunted in Kenya in the golden era of hunting long before it was banned. He started hunting there in the late 30s right up to the war, then he joined the army. After the war he hunted in Tanzania,Uganda and then S. AFRICA.
