MONSTER KUDU
I am in awe!
Have never seen anything like it in my life - and i have seen some!
Unfortunately the piece is in Afrikaans - perhaps someone (Jerome?) can translate the text?
The author is from Hoedspruit in South-Africa but it does not state where this leviathon was hunted. As the article was published in 2011 i believe it was taken this year. It was shot with a 93x62 at 180 paces with CDP 286 gr

..always we struggel wif de eeengrish peopol..!

Basically, this beautiful Kudu measuring 72.5 inches, was taken on a farm bordering the Hoedspruit AFB. Hoedspruit is in north-east Limpopo Province. The rest is about how happy the hunter was and about much drinking of good beer..!
One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted.

Very impressive kudu for sure!
My interpretation of the text:
"I am one lucky SOB! This is truly an awesome kudu. I shot it and then partied so much that my head was pounding the next day. To be honest...I don't remember much from that night. BUT, I do remember shooting the awesome kudu. Thanks"
I could be wrong....but that is probably something close to what my comments would be.Tom

they never even showed a good picture of the kudu. Half those pictures you can't even see a good full view of the horns because of the tops being whited out. I just don't like it when such a big animal is so poorly photographed. Can anyone please post better pics of this monster. Those pics dont do him justice

Hi guys,
As an Afrikaans speaker, here's some insight for you"
This was published in a Hunting organization's news letter of some sorts, not a news paper.
The Kudu was shot by the farmer himself. This may explain the questions about photo quality, as it was not a PH taking photos of a client.
Throughout the article the farmer speaks with great respect for this Kudu. Almost as if there was something mystical about this Kudu. A bond between the two of them.
He saw him a number of times before and he immediately knew that he was "Special". The first time he saw him was with a client and he even saw him from a helicopter after that.
On the day he shot the Kudu, the farmer was checking fences when he saw him, but the big old bull looked sick and tired, he could see it in his eyes..the bull had lost weight, but his horns looked even bigger than before..the fight in his eyes was gone now.
The farmer rushed home to fetch his rifle, in such a hurry he even left his dog, Roftie behind. This had to be settled today.
The farmer tracked the bull and when he saw him at 180yards, he knew this was it. With no rest nearby he knew he had to be quick and fired. With the monkeys going crazy and the birds flying everywhere, the bulls goes down with an almighty roar, unlike anything the farmer has heard before. He gets up, looking at the farmer as though he owes him money and runs another 50 yards, before going down for the final time with another loud roar.
Silence falls over the Bushveld.
The workers load the bull in an eerie silence and with an unusual sense of respect. Even they realize a legend has fallen.
When measuring the horns, the farmer's 60inch tape runs out and his friend says: "You are 12inches short"
The Farmer was very emotional that evening and that was the end of "The Legend of Welverdiend".
*Welverdiend* means "Well deserved" for interest sake.

I wonder what the 'normal' horn measured and what the total score was. It is clear from the photo that the 72inches are that of the deformed horn. Does Rowland word accept these kinds of horns? Still amazing that a horn can get that long!

That is a kudu one only dreams of!! What a monster! I know if I was the lucky hunter I would have one big aching head the next day! If one can't celebrate over taking a trophy like that, what can you celebrate for!

Thanks for posting this story fhm3006 and to CapeHunter for giving us some insight from the Afrikaans text.
A huge Kudu and certainly an incredible trophy. You can see from the picture below that the growth of the left horn is abnormal if compared to the right horn.
