Rick, I hope that you are able to sleep on the plane! Wishing you the best on your first hunt! Soak it all in, I look forward to hearing about it.

You only get one first safari so enjoy it. It will be different than you imagined, better in some ways, maybe not so much in other ways. There will be highs and lows too, but enjoy it all! You will likely start planning your next trip before you leave RSA. Good hunting!!

Ha, one first safari. So true. But we all know it won't be his only!!!!!!!!!
I'm trying to think how mine was worse than I imagined. There were so many unknowns beyond my departure and arrival times that I can't say that I was disappointed with anything. The PH's were good, the facilities were good, critters were good, even my SAP experience was good (I used a service to handle the forms before arrival.) The only thing that sucked was trying to get on US Central time upon the return trip. ;D

30 Days ... 30 Days. My Ph called today and said it is very cold this year in the northern cape. Not what I wanted to hear but I am from Wisconsin and how bad can it be. As long as I don't wake up to snow we will be good. Good hunting all.

Rick P,
You know the old saying or was it Charlie Brown who said, "The anticipation exceeded the actual event". After many years of reading about and dreaming about safari, I had perhaps too many preconceived notions about how it should be courtesy of Ruark, Hemingway and Capstick that my expectations were perhaps a little unrealistic. Not to say I didnt love it because I did but reality does have a way of going against the dream to some extent. However as my 6th trip is due in June, I guess it didnt totally ruin it for me as I still cannot get enough of Africa.
