What Areas Have You Hunted in Namibia?

What areas have you hunted in Namibia? What species did you take? How many days? If you have hunted in more than one area how did they compare? For those of you unfamiliar with Namibia you can use these hunting maps as reference.

In 2007 my brother and I hunted in central Namibia northwest of Windhoek. In and around the Okahandja & Omaturo(?) areas. Game taken was Gemsbok, Heartebeast, Impala, Kudu, Springbok, Warthog & Zebra. Animals seen but not taken were Duiker, Eland, Giraffe, Ostrich, Steenbok, Black Wildebeast. Lots of Baboons and Blackbacked Jackals. One African Wildcat was seen.

I hunted SW of Windhoek about 1.5 from the capital of the country last year. They had a lot of bat eared foxes, black back jackels, gemsbok, springbok, blesbok, warthogs and red hartebeast. Kudu were in short supply due to rabies. There were good quality of blue and black wildebeest, mountain zebra and eland...just not huge numbers of animal. There were small spotted genet, caracal, impala and klipspringer too. Very open area...near the Namib Desert.

Witvlei, well east of Windhoek, not too far from Gobabis. Another concession NW of there too. Only 5 days hunting: took 2 kudu, 1 red hartebeeste, 1 gemsbok, & a few jackals thrown in since it was a cattle area & the PH had a 'shoot on sight' imperative.

Other species seen: warthog by the dozen, eland, springbok (hundreds), impala, sable, roan, blue & black wildebeeste, waterbuck, , duiker, steenbuck, chacma baboons, giraffe, ostrich, + one very, VERY impressive black rhino. I'm probably forgetting several. There were numerous game & song birds about as well. Athough it's prolific cheetah country I saw no big cats or elephants, but did see some caracal & African wildcat tracks. Got stung by a very sneaky scorpion while camping the 2nd week. One snake crossing the road, few spiders. Beautiful country........

I loved my time there and want the people of Namibia to get more visiting hunters and tourist. I would definitely like to go back someday!

wyoguide, welcome to AH. Is this your first safari and what will you be hunting in Namibia? It would be great if you would do a short post in the introductions & greets.

I hunted with an outfitter just South of Kamanjab. Beautiful country, very few fences and lots of eland, kudu, springbuck, gemsbuck, blue wildebeast, giraffe, warthogs and hartebeast. My outfitter had a cheetah problem, but I never saw any. In one of his outpost camps, the leopard numbers were astounding. We walked river valleys and kopjes for miles and most of that time you couldn't walk 50 feet without stepping on a cat track. If I ever get the $ for a leopard hunt that is where I'm going. I am going back with my wife in March.

I hunted in Omaruru, on the Omaruru river, about 2-2.5 hours NW of Windhoek last year. Great area, far enough away from tourists and the "big" city. It is a "farming/ranching" community, but is home to the only winery in Namibia - they make a great prickly pear desert cactus schnapps!

I hunted kudu, oryx, warthog, jackal, baboon, springbok, impala, and zebra. Took some great animals and had a blast. 7 days total.

John, my son and I were in Omaruru last summer. We hunted with Nick Nolte Safaris and couldn't have had a better trip. I have told several friends that had you given me a blank piece of paper to script the ten days, I wouldn't have done as well as it actually unfolded. We both took Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Oryx, Mountain Zebra, and Warthog. My son also took two Hartebeest and I shot a huge Springbock and a wonderful Leopard. Am headed up to the Caprivi next summer for Buffalo, but hope to be back in Omaruru in '11.

During the first couple of weeks in June ’09 I hunted with Keith Wright of Didimala Safaries. Keith has been granted access to three adjoining conservancies in the Kunene region of the northwest Namib Desert between the Skeleton Coast and Etosha National Park. At about 55 million years of age the Namib is believed to be the world’s oldest desert. Keith’s hunting block totals more than nine million acres of completely unfenced wilderness area.

Hunters are likely to encounter members of the ancient Himba tribe of semi-nomadic people who occupy the Kunene region of the country. The Himba’s are an ethnic group of about 20,000 to 50,000 nomadic and pastoral people living in that region. They are an extraordinary people who have resisted change and preserved their unique cultural heritage. The Himba men we encountered wore loin clothes and the bare breasted Himba women rubbed their entire bodies with a red paste made from ochre powder. Turning their skin red apparently corresponds to the Himba woman’s ideal of beauty.

The hunting area held a variety of game which included desert Elephant, Kudu, Klipspringer, Springbok, Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Hyenas, Black Back Jackal, Gemsbok, Springbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Giraffe and Ostrich. A few Black Rhino also inhabit the area and they are a nice sight.

Gemsbok and Springbok were quite plentiful and with a bit of patience I believe hunters can expect an opportunity to take high ranking trophies as it was not uncommon for us to come across 40+ inch Gemsbok and 16+ inch Springbok. The Hartmann’s mountain Zebra is another fine trophy which is indigenous to the area and was quite plentiful. As with most desert hunting one should expect moderately long shots. 175 out to about 300 yards seemed to be the average. However, shots beyond 300 yards were not really necessary.

Hunting 12 days near Otavi and Grootfontien.2 Kudu,Eland,2 Gemsbok,Red Hartebeest,Black Wildebeest,Blue Wildebeest male+female,2 Warthog,several baboon of various sizes,Jackal,and a couple of culls of mixed species.

Had a Mamba rear up while in some rocks on a hillside,made a hasty retreat(only snake I've ever seen while hunting)PH had a good look,I only saw a movement off to the side

Loved every minute,will return for sure.Next time self driving tour for a few weeks,and a little hunting.Damara DikDik and Moutain Zebra,whatever else comes our way,Klipspringer,Steenbok???

I hunted early June on Windpoort farms with Tim Osborne. Tim is a retired game biologist from Alaska. Was able to get Kudu,Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, and warthog. Tim is a biologist with encyclopedic knowledge. Included in his package was 2 days in Etosha and a non-hunting companion.I saw Eland, DikDik,Steenbok,Springbok. Didn't find a large blue Widebeest or Hartman's Zebra to harvest but will be back. Tim has black rhino on his place and was also able to see cheetah.

I have hunted the same property (Otjikoko) near Omaruru that John Crighton did. Hunted 7 days in 2008 and left the day after he arrived. I was able to see his magnificent kudu taken early morning before we left. In 2007, I was fortunate to take 2 kudu, 2 oryx, 2 warthog, several jackals and baboons, and a magnificent leopard there on Otjikoko. If anyone is looking for a nice kudu bull, that is the place.

I have bowhunted warthog, gemsbok (a perfect heart shot) and kudu on a farm south of the Waterberg in the Otjiwarongo District.

Do you have GPS coordinates for Nick's lodge? I am booked to hunt there next summer and was trying to find it on Google Earth. Glad you and your son had a good trip. I am taking my wife and daughter.

Brant, They are located a bit North of Omaruru, off of the C33 going to Otjiwarongo, did a manual view search on Google earth and think that I found them. Click here for Nick Nolte Safaris satellite map from google earth.

Brant, Nick and Isabelle are a wonderful couple and you will have a fantastic trip in their care. I think Jerome has them located exactly. Nick has access to a number of very large ranches which have very healthy game populations. You will have a grand time. Feel free to shoot me a private email.

I've hunted in Namibia four times. Twice in the Kalkfeld area for plains game and took a 54 and 58 inch Kudu, 17 inch Sprinkbok, two Impala including one of 24 inches, 30 inch Waterbuck, 34 inch Gemsbok Bull, an average Warthog, and a gold medal Black Wildebeest.

I also hunted Northwest of Kamanjab, in an area bordering Etosha an took a 42 inch Gemsbok Bull, male Giraffe and a Mountain Zebra Stallion. Following the hunt in this area I went down to an area West of Okahanja and took a 15 inch Warthog.

The last area I hunted was in the Caprivi where I took an old Cape Buffalo Bull with 15 1/2 inch bosses and a Burchell Zebra Stallion.
