Red Hartebeest w/ pics
hey guys, first post on this site i believe. i just wanted to post as i'm curious about an animal i killed in namibia this summer. i hunted a bunch of plains game, and the red hartebeest i took was by far my most exciting and rewarding hunt. the guide said it was a real big one, but as i'd never seen them in real life before, i have no way to judge it. i know it was old, as it's teeth were all worn flat, extremely flat, there was basically nothing left. Also, it had a bunch of charicter. one horn was a bit cracked at the base, and it's right eye was dead. there was nothing inside the socket, an old battle wound or injury. quartering away, layed the shot behind the ribcage and broke the opposite shoulder, and i STILL had to follow up. incredible animals. btw neither of the pics have a good angle on the curl going backwards. but when i held its horn to measure, with my hand against the upright part, and thumb running along the tip, there was at least 3 inches past the tip of my thumb. does anyone have pics of anything GIANT to compare to?

Thanks for the pictures safari hunter.
skip0ls, Your Hartebeest trophy is truly exceptional and has as much in height as these big boys, however the only thing that might separate yours from those posted by safari hunter, which I can't tell from your picture is the thickness of the horns. Your Hartebeest has very nice bases, but without seeing it from the side angle it is difficult to truly judge.
As you can see from the SCI record book pictures, they often take a Hartebeest trophy picture from the side to show the thickness of the horns from that view. As you can see those two record book trophies have incredible thickness, this is where they gain inches.
Here you can see a side view of a more typical Hartebeest trophy. You can see the difference between
these bases from the side, the record book ones have a bulging appearance whereas these have more of
a flatten type of appearance.

...Very nice looking Hartebeest! Has decent looking bases & length - truly a grand trophy regardless of the measurements!! Thats what a hunter looks for the old warrior of the species!

I guarantee your red hartebeest is a monster! While it may not be number #1 in the record books...it's a damn nice animal. I really loved hunting them in Namibia, to me it's just a dream animal to hunt them.
I love the height and ridges on your red hartebeest!

skip0ls, Very nice hartebeest. To me a mature old bull like that makes it a wonderful trophy, regardless of the "inches". The hartebeest horns are very unique and portray the image of Africa.
On the last day of my first hunt in South Africa, we came across a lone hartebeest bull that my PH said was a "monster", and urged me to shoot it. As I had already "over shot" my budget by several animals, I turned it down. I thought about that hartebeest for several years, and a hartebeest was high on my "want list" for my second African hunt.

i killed 2 on my first hunt. the one pictured and another decent ram. the 2nd one was an older cull ram with no real potential to be great. i shot him at about 200 yds on a dead sprint. i was very happy with that animal but i regret not taking pictures of his skull (or what was left of it)
