Hunting Plains Game of South Africa

Hi, I'm going on a plains game hunt to RSA for ten days next summer and am trying to decide which animals to try to take. However this is my first hunt and it all is a little overwhelming. I'm hunting with JohnXSafaris, so I just wondered if anyone had an opinion on any "must hunt" animals while I'm there. Thanks

Hi Ray I would suggest to find out which species are indigenous to the area and focus on them. But for the most part I would just enjoy the experience of the hunt.

I wholeheartedy agree with Louis. You should first look to relax and fully enjoy the sights, sounds and the overall experience you will soon be encountering. I believe that's of major importance with any hunt, anywhere.

As for me, one of the main reasons I travel and hunt in various areas is the opportunity to encounter and perhaps take the indigenous species that inhabit the area. So it goes without saying that that's what I always focus on. Besides, the search for native species gives a guy good reason to continue traveling and hunting.

Since John X Safaris is know for there big kudu....it would be first on my list. The one thing that I studied a lot...was all the colorful brochures I had picked up from going to SCI conventions in my home state. There were a lot of pictures of the animals and sights to see in Africa, and it helped me picture what I might see while visiting there on vacation. And this website thanks to Jerome has a ton information on the animals in Africa, how to tell a male and female apart, habits and how to judge a immature from a mature animal. Look under the Hunter Forum page and search the information out. I assure you Jerome has done his homework.

I always suggest that in addition to the high-profile antelopes every first-timer goes after, such as kudu and gemsbok, you be sure to take the animals that are indigenous only to where you are hunting. In South Africa, that would include bontebok, blesbok, black wildebeest, southern mountain reedbuck, Cape bushbck, Cape grysbok, etc.

i made my first trip to namibia this year. i hunted oryx, blue wildebeest, warthog, red hartebeest, and springbok. next trip, i'll go for black wildebeest and blesbok for sure, possibly kudu. for some wierd reason i wasn't into the kudu hunt that much. i had a beauty at less than 50 yards but didnt have the interest. i enjoyed the wildebeest, oryx, and hartebeest the most. those 3 made the trip for me.

...All the suggestions stated above are great. You may want to add a Impala & Warthog to the list. Go there & live Africa for all its worth. Those memories are just as important as the animals you hunt. It's an experience you will never forget!
