Judge this kudu
Okay boys,
I studied and studied on what a big kudu looks like. It didnt do much good. I could tell the difference between a giant kudu and a normal one. But when it came to judging the 50" mark i was not so succesful. I had a PH with me the whole time so he realy helped me with some tips.
So what do you think ???
I have walked in the tracks of the elephant, heard the lion roar and met the buffalo on his terms. I shall never be the same.

Curl and three quarters, fairly deep, tips still facing inward - sooo ..... I am guessing a six year old 46-48 inches. Nevertheless, a wonderful trophy with great proportions.

A nice old Kudu bull passed his prime, above average open curls which in my opinion adds to his length... I would say 50 inches (127 cm) for his left horn and 52 inches (132 cm) for his right horn horn, 10.63 inches (27cm) for each base.

kudu horn size
This kudu would be around 53" mark.A farmer told be the best way to judge kudu horn length is by saying 1st curl 16" 2nd curl 16" 3rd curl 16" and the point up about 8".

Well..........I do not know squat about judging kudu beyond what I like and the ones I have scored. My guess would be around 51 inches....a nice bull........but I will bow to Jerome's guess as he is more precise and has seen more kudu than you can shake a stick at.

I like the big curls!Skyline Adventures

Okay, Jerome has the right idea.
If you look close you can see that the left horn has bigger curls than the right. The guides even got it wrong at first glance. They said the right horn is longer. We measure it and it is 49.25". We tape out the left and it is 53.75". We measured it again. Then Dries backs up and looks and says, Oh i see the curl is alot bigger on the left one.
So even with the tip broomed of the left horn is almost 4" longer.
So i already had the number of curls down. I had a good idea about length of horn in relation to the neck. (broadside view). I then added Big curls out even with the ear tips. After this i started doing a better on guessing shooter or not.
By the way my PH says it is practicly impossible to judge a bull without a front and side view.I have walked in the tracks of the elephant, heard the lion roar and met the buffalo on his terms. I shall never be the same.
