Kudu Bull
Hi RJC
I have seen you on a lot of Dries Visser hunting videos and wish to shoot a kudu like yours. How much did you pay for that kudu?

Dox,
If I remember correctly, Dries has an $1500 base, then $100 for each inch over 50". Kudu was not on my list this last trip because I had taken a 52" in 2005. But, when you have a bull like that come in, you don't pass it up.
The property that I hunted this bull on is a new property to Dries. We checked trail cameras before hunting and had over 2000 pics to view. The number of huge Kudu bulls was amazing.
We saw several pics of bulls over 55" on the trail cam pics. If you decide to hunt with Dries, you will not regret it...I can't wait to go back agian! Last year in 10 days I had 541 animals come to the water holes that I was hunting. Phenominal hunt.

Dox,
I just got back from dries visser.
Kudu was $1500 + $100 an inch up to 60". Anything larger than 60" was $3,500 dollars.
I did find out that there are different price list for package hunts / daily rate hunts etc. so you might want to contact dries directly.I have walked in the tracks of the elephant, heard the lion roar and met the buffalo on his terms. I shall never be the same.

That seems a little pricey. But hey, there aren't that many 60 inchers running around either.

I think if the price is $3500 for 60"+ Kudu is fine. When you look at what we are paying for sable, roan....etc. .... There are not a lot of 60" 's and it takes 10+ years to grow them that big.

I guess i should say the reason i know this. My guide told me there was 1 bull they all think will go 60" plus on the property we were hunting. He asked me if i wanted to shoot him knowing the price difference.

The 60 inch Kudu is, of course, the Holy Grail of Kudu hunting..The problem is the quality of these hunts has been diluted with fencing and breeding programs, thus there are 60 inchers and there are 60 inchers, much the same as our Whitetail deer...
Those from behind a high fence cannot be recorded in B&C, therefore don't count in the eyes of some...Wild 60 inch Kudu are rare as hens teeth, but they do exist in certain areas of So. Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique, and a few other places, and in those areas it is remote, hard to get to them, very hard to hunt, and you must be in very good condition and be willing to suffer the hardships that a true hunt can dish out..It will test your metal, but the end result is one of the all time rushes, The Kudu is the Grey Ghost and the ultimate challenge when met and challenged on his own turf and on his terms.
I personally have shot a number of near 60 inch Kudu, and one 60 incher, mostly on fenced ranches of about 15,000 to 75,000 acres and a lesser number of them on unfenced concessions.
Also, there is a size difference in the Great Southern Kudu of Zim, Moz, and the Eastern Cape of Southern So. AFrica and as a rule the Eastern Cape is the smaller, but there have been exceptions..
Those big black Kudu of Mozambique are the Holy Grail of Kudu and the record book has at least one Lion Kill that went 72 inches as I recall, and others near that number..Those kills date back some years and do those big bulls still survive there..I know that at least one does.RAY ATKINSON

Frederik that is a neat bull.
These bulls make my old kudu bull kind of ......small.......
He was free range in Namibia and he is mine. I look at him every day. If I never kill another I will be content because he is mine. But I can still appreciate these awesome bulls.

Kelly,
My personal best for Kudu is 50" and I hunted that specific open range kudu bull over a 3 year period. Unless I get given a kudu bull for free I will never shoot a bigger one I suppose, so I feel the same way as you about it.

Frederik...............yes that is the size of my bull. 50. We turned down younger bulls that were 52-54 and I then killed the old guy. He is a great trophy to me and I have never been too worried about a couple of inches.
I hope to hunt kudu again in the next year or two and maybe I will get a bigger bull...........but if not, oh well.
Jerome that 64 inch kudu bull is awesome.Skyline Adventures

Hi Gents, I'm new to the forum, still plenty of big kudu in South Africa and the Eastern Cape is catching up with the rest of South Africa and producing some >55" kudu's and the occasional 60". Here is a picture of a possible South African record kudu bull taken earlier this year on a farm in the Limpopo province.
