Strange but true a free range sable was shot in Texas
It seems that a free range sable was shot in Texas this week. The initial response is that it must be an escaped exotic. None were reported and the nearest high fence seems to be about 50 miles away. Quite a trophy for free. Is there a wild breeding population?Strange but true.

I just reread the whole thread and no one has claimed it as an escapee it is just one guess. If you know where it came from please tell us.

I am missing a Sable from my paddock. It didn't like the cold and migrated south.

Sable are obvously not native to Texas but what a cool story. We have a growing moose population here in New York so who knows. Lol, I know, I know, as improbable as Elk in Pennsylvania.

It had to be an escapee. Where else would it come from? Swim the Atlantic? Maybe it hitched a ride on shipping container and made its great escape to Texas.

Exotic escapees are not that uncommon in parts of Texas. A few years back, my taxidermist shot an exotic Hawaiin billy that jumped the truck from a nearby livestock auction. It survived a few months until deer season. Pennsylvanians don't play around!
