Come to Australia...
Don't Mess with a Redback Spider!!
An office receptionist got the shock of her life earlier this week when she found a 70cm long snake entangled in the web of a deadly spider. Tania Robertson, a receptionist at an electrical firm in Perth, came in to work on Tuesday and spotted the sight next to a desk in her office.. The snake, which had obviously died from the spider's poisonous bite, was off the ground and caught up in the web.
Leon Lotz of the Arachnology Department at the National Museum said it was only the second time that he had heard of a snake getting caught in a spider's web. It is believed the snake got caught in the web on Monday night. But it did not take the spider long to bite it. A red mark on the snake's stomach was evidence of where the spider had started eating it.
Throughout Tuesday, the spider checked on her prey, but on Wednesday she rolled it up and started spinning a web around it. She also kept lifting it higher off the ground, while continually snacking on it.

I know why I like the cold weather in Canada now.
We don't have bugs as big as dinner plates that can kill you.

Spiders you can step on are fine, spiders that require a 410 with buckshot I can live without!
The journey is the reward.

Both a venomous! They can keep the lot.
I can deal with Grizzlies. They don't sneak into your house and hide in your boot.

I wonder how the redback compares to the brown recluse (always one of my favorites)?
The thought of body parts rotting off from the inside out has always captured my attention
Now scorpions, the National Venomous Bug of Texas, whether the Mexican red, that makes you sick or the desert blacks that make you sicker, just really hard to find something to like about those guys.

Kind of looks like the Black widow spiders that i keep killing in the yard 4 this year and counting. Have 2 more spotted that will be sprayed on Thursday.
Kind of like ants, scorpions, grasshoppers, crickets, stink bugs, spiders, fly's and mosquito's. A few days (about a week) after i spray the fly's and mosquitoes still drop out of the air flying in my yard. If it fly's it dies...James Grage - New Mexico

The fact that this lady let it hang around a few days to watch it tells me she has a few screws loose!
Enjoy life now -- it has an expiration date.

Redbacks are only little fellas really....nasty though. Queensland has some big hairyarsedbastards that kill birds...in fact the last big h.a.b spider killed up there had a dead Jack Russell in it's web. Now that was a spider!

Timbear my dear friend, please do not take offence to what i am about to post, these forums are ment to entertain and educate, and i for one have certainly learnt alot from the members... however the title of your thread needs to be changed to.
Come to South Africa , where our spiders eat our snakes !
i am keen herpatologst and can confirm with certainty that the pictures you posted are of a Black widow spider eating an Aurora House Snake in South Africa, the Black Widow closly resembles the Red Back Spider however the Black Widow has the red hour glass mark UNDER the abdomen where the Red Back Spider has the red mark ONTOP of the abdomen
The Snake is a harmless constrictor it doesnt grow very large and eats mice...
i Thank you for your pictures though and.... COME AFRICA WHERE OUR SPIDERS EAT OUR SNAKESAnton Davidson(PH)

Anton, I mailed the article and photos as they were sent to me by a friend. Not having seen the spider and snake personally, I can not vouch for the authenticity, but the last time I looked, Perth was in Western Australia. As for coming to Africa, neither snakes nor spiders can deter me (and I'm bringing my .375 H&H for those pesky buffalo!). Soon, I hope!
