This has been around for awhile...the pictures are more southern that a northern state.

    Not Montana...

I am thinking Arizona, New Mexico. for these pictures.

    Maybe southern Nevada or Utah...

I want to know who taught that Mule to retrieve!

I am not convinced it is not already dead and the Mule just decided to show its dislike for it.
(those dogs just don't look interested enough)

Yup I'd have to agree. There are century plants in the picture that would not be found to my knowledge in the northern Rockies. This picture has been around for awhile. The word I got was the mtn lion was already dead when the mule got to it.

Having been around both horses and mules when I lived in Idaho, I can believe the mule would do this. A riding friend of mine had a great mule named Sanford. Sanford always alerted us to the presence of both elk and moose, but never mule deer. He apparently had no issues with mule deer, some slight issues with elk, but he absolutely hated moose. I never could figure out what his issue was with moose, but on any given ride if either elk or moose were near by, we would know in advance before seeing them. Old Sanford's disposition would change. If he was only mildly bothered it was elk, if he really began to "talk" to us we knew it was moose.

While giving up in the looks department, a mule is a far more interesting creature than a horse. The horse's would just sort of spook on game while a mule seemed to determined to seek out his tormenter with the intent of doing harm.

Well you guys are close, This mule lion thing has been out for several years. My better half did a paper for her degree 3 or 4 years ago on this very act. Seems like she got an A If I recall. Belive it or not it was for an animal science class on alternant preditor control!!!! Anyway this happened in TEXAS. The boys where out with the hounds and this crazy lion tryed to sneek up on the mule that they had left to try and start the lion track with there hounds. Poor cat, I'm sure he won't do that again

Well I could believe it was in the mountains of west Texas. And I can certainly believe the mule would defend itself and with one swift kick could knock the cat silly and then it's doomsday if the mule continues the fight.

But the hunters leaving the mule is what seems odd. There aren't any hobbles on the mule and there doesn't seem to be any trees around to tie him off too. Furthermore there's no halter on the mule either.

Whatever the case, did the mule kill the cat? The last picture to me looks like the mule is pawing at a dead cat.
