What's your EDC knife while out hunting??
Not to revive an old thread, or to be controvercial, but what [type] of edc knife do you carry on your person while hunting?
we all know its horses for courses, and that the one ideal,do it all knife is still a myth [fortunately!]
its a historical fact that the 2 x knives that tamed Africa were the dirt cheap but versatile okapi and the bigger panga[they came in different sizes]
the okapi skinned and processed more domestic and wild animals [big and small] in Africa than all the other brand names put together and i want to bet that its still one of the most commonly used and preferred edc knives doing most of the hard work out there.....
if we look at the history [+_ 100 yrs. ago] of the hunters of that era then it seems that they preferred a 2 knife combo for edc
[a pocket knife and a bigger belt knife ,later called a 'hunting' knife]
seen here is the famous game ranger of the knp harry wolhuter on a horse.
observe the 'hunting' knife on his hip
[picture from another thread]
a close-up of the same cheap butchers knife that he used to kill the lion with [knp museum]
its my humble opinion that the 'ideal' edc combo would be a 3 x knife set-up
small --pocket knife/multitool
medium-- skinning knife/camp chores
larger--- hide/blind preparing and bigger tasks [a small saw or axe would propably also do]
my 3 x knife edc set-up looks as follows
[its most probably over kill, but i just love it and it works for me..]
It seems to me that the ideal 'do it all' mythical knife does not exist, though depending on your experience and knife skills, you would maybe be able to get away most of the times on a one knife compromise..
my advice is that whatever brand or type of knife you chose-its ok as long as you know how to handle it, and you have it on your person, cause you never know when you are going to need it out there..
can some ph,outfitters out there give us some practical input after a lot of usage/experience on their edc knives?
[folder or fixed blade, most practical blade length and shape, most common use
[eg skinning, food /meat processing, camp chores, hide building etc.]
how does your edc knife differ from the tracker/skinners knife?
