    A bit of explanation for the non Canadians in the crowd.
    The Senate is the Upper house in Parliament. National government.

    These folks are appointed, as tradition prescribes, and many people complain that the upper house is a repository for less motivated public servants.

    The appointments to the Senate are also life terms.

    sounds like a lot of what we have. LOL We do have a lot in common.
