Hi, just got back from the Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex checking the "sight in" on my 500 Jeffery. I had to convince them to let me shoot it there, but the folks running the range are really nice and they did. The last time I checked it was 2 1/2" high at 100 yards, dead on at 25 and 175 which is just where I want it. Some things I noticed ...

1. It's not as loud as a braked 308 WCF, one was a couple of stations to my left.

2. It was dead on. The Talley QR rings and Leupold 1.5-5x scope still amaze me since I haven't touched the scope in over a hundred rounds.

3. I only fired 3 rounds but the recoil seemed non-existent. I must be truly punch drunk

Hunting elk with my son next weekend near our property up in Guffey, CO. I only have the weekend to hunt, business trip to Japan the following week. He thinks I'm trying to scare them to death lol

:)

Re-inventing the mountain man image, lol...good luck hunting.

What are you using for projectiles?

Barnes 570g TSX at 2300 fps. I know some folks have issues with the TSX opening up at lower velocities, but based on the one cow elk, and 450 lb feral hog I've shot with this load, they expand fine and fully penetrate causing massive damage. Maybe the fact that they were designed for the 500 NE which shoots at a couple of hundred fps slower explains that.

Can't wait to go elk hunting this weekend.... Heading to Bayfield on Thursday!

Lets see, I think you're in the neighborhood of 8000 fps of energy? Yep, you got enough for a 700 lb elk! Watch out for the deadly charge if cornered and wounded though :) :) :) I'm off for dangerous deer down in Texas in 2 days. Boy, I don;t know if I can handle it, they might hit 135 lbs dripping wet. They're about the size of a German Shepard most of the time.

When I first moved to Montana I was hunting elk with a 243. I upgraded to a 270 because of grizzlies sitting on kills. Then I met someone at Seeley Lake Montana benefit. They sold bbq, baked goods, beer/soda and the big attraction was "shoot the Buick" for $1. They had a worse for wear 55 Buick on blocks and it was a dollar a shot lol. One guy brought a pre-64 M70 in 375 H&H his dad had given him. He let me shoot it. He used it for deer, antelope and elk. I asked him if it was a bit much. He said "they don't get up"

:)

I never have understood how you can "overkill" something! :)

I was planning on using my new 404 Jeffery on a deer this year as an exercise in wretched excess. I'm suddenly feeling a little inadequate!

The "over kill" can happen when you shoot a herd animal with a "stopper"! :)
