just a question ,,,why save Carp

it's an enclosed dam [lake] with only one biggish seasonal feeding river, [sterk river] otherwise in winter the river many timed just dries up or at best it only has a trickle of water, depending on the rains. .
big ones are saved for breeding purposes in the dam by order of nature conservation.

Rob your probably thinking Carp like we have here in the states "shit eating fish" the carp that I've seen in Europe and Africa are a grass carp type and are considered a game fish and are pretty tasty. Germans pay to fish ponds with Crucian carp in them.

Thanks for the info,,,I,m sure they farm raise Carp here like they do Catfish which I find to be extremely tasty

Carp have a bad name in the USA, but they are tasty to eat. The media blows everything out of proportion. Still I'd rather have perch or walleye.

I understand they Smoke it down South,,,I wonder how there able to keep it Lit ???

Walleye! The best tasting freshwater fish ever!

I think smoked carp is pretty good! Bluey is right, they are an invasive species to most streams, lakes, etc.

gday eric
invasive species is the words l was looking for ,
where l come from they are right through our lake system and grow up to 30 kgs+ in all the coves and back waters that back on to farm land the farmers net them in and plough them into their paddocks for fertilizer
another company electro fishes them , by poking an elctro magnet type of rod in to water which somehow attracts them to it and zapps them ,they get up to 100 tonnes in a week after good rain
that washes them out of the rivers
other than that the kids from the archery clubs have some sport with them bow fishing .
cant say l know a single person that eats them

I use to spear them when streams fooded and they were in small pools of water. A friend and I started to smoke them and fill the freezer. They are a boney fish and if you take your fingers, a spoon or fork, you can break them apart for eating. My freezer is getting empty, I'd take carp.

The Hmong population around where I live keep the population in check.

aren't they full of mud over your way ,eric?
these guys we have are chock full of it mate
come on over mate , we will get you more carp ( should be spelt , crap )
than you will ever eat.
next time l get to go for a walk l will send you pictures of how thick they get in the coves and rivers at the back of home
during the summer holidays the river banks a littered with discarded fish that people hook while trying for bream and luderick
it fascinates me how in one place something is rubberish , while in others its edible and then in other places like bob said ,the germans pay to catch them .

any germans on here want to pay me to come over and catch them ,im all for that .... :eyecrazy:

Like you said, they are considered a bottom feeder, that is where they get a bad reputation. And if the water has PBCs then I would not want them, but there are plenty of other areas were them live in less polluted water. Yes they are used for fertilizer here too, which I think is STUPID, because if you put a ad in the newspaper FREE CARP, it would all disappear. Like you said one persons trash is another's lucky day present

Very interesting views and comments on carp from the other side of the big water!

Here is my dad [at 79 still very active and strong for his age] after a couple of hours of fishing--it was a huge privilege to still be able to share our love for the outdoors over so many years, and to be able to sat with him for a weekend doing what he likes--priceless!

How to cook "Plank Carp"
1) Take two large fillets and rub with olive oil, salt, pepper and a little Italian spice
2) Place on clean cedar plank also rubbed with olive oil
3) Place in 300 degree oven for 25 mins or until meat is flaky
4) Remove from oven and lift fillets off of plank and place on plate
5) Throw plate and contents away and eat plank!!!!! :) :)

Oh Cliffy...lol

I have never tried to pickle carp, but I think it would work. People pickle northern pike all the time.

im glad you get to persue fishing for carp with your father willem
and l hope you enjoy the fish mate .
whats the biggest one you or your dad have taken ?
