I am in the planning a trip to to sa for a 7/10 days hunt. Just wondering if I am better to book a cull hunt and add a couple of trophy animals on top to bring home or should I just book a smaller trophy hunt.
Not going to be able to get over until 2014.
What are people's views

It depends on your budget I like to be a little more selective on my animals and give a few days for each. If you like a lot of trigger time go for the cull hunt on a budget if you like trophy quality spend some time for the right animal.

Nice thing about hunting SA is you can change your mind when there. If you just want to hunt and dont care about trophy size you will get more bang for your buck with a cull hunt. You want trophy size to mount then do a trophy hunt. The good thing is you can do both on the same trip. You will find most SA outfitters to be easy to work with and will change plans as you hunt if you want.I would get some cost up front on both and let them know your not sure about what you want.If you have the prices for both up front no need to worry if you change your plans during the hunt. You can add the cost as you go and stay in your budget. But good luck with that as budgets get all out of wack after you see all the animals.LOL Go luck with the planning that is part of the fun to.

Thanks very much for your help. So keen to get out there.
Budget is the big thing for me. I am still pretty young. Only 24. I work as a farm worker in Scotland. Not the biggest wage to fuel my craze of hunting.

Save your dollars, Africa in my opinion is the most cost effective hunt going and on top of it, the amount/varity of game is staggering and i come from western Canada where the hunting is very good....

One thing to consider is whether or not you want to have any taxidermy work done & have some nice wall hangers. I made my first hunt a trophy package deal because I planned on getting everything mounted and wanted decent animals. Doing this almost doubled the hunt's cost.

I am only after euro mounts and skins.
I do like the shoulder mount. But money is the issue. Maybe if I got a big kudu bull I would do a shoulder mount. I have a lot of wall space. I only have roe and red on the wall the now. Got a cwd hunt booked for November. So hopefully this will change.
Cheers

Think I am going to book a cull hunt then add 3 or 4 nices trophies.
Can't wait. Well looking forward to it.

Well enjoy the planning and looking forward to, because when the day arrive that you fly to SA the hunt is almost over. Once you are here the time just fly!

Regards

Yeah it will be good. Just save save save the now.
So many animals to chose from arhhhh. Can't make my mind up

I have chose to do a cull hunt then stick a few trophy animals on top.
Has anyone shot the grand slam springboks
Cheers

The springbuck slam is on the list for my son to hunt when we go back in 2014.Have taken the common already but will more then likely take another of those also. Not sure if that would be the trophies I would add to a cull hunt. They add up quick with cost after the common and black as the white and copper will cost anywhere from 800 to 1500 each depending on who you hunt with.Plus if you really want the slam it limits you on places to hunt because not all places have all four colors.I would make a list of what you want trophys of and then do your cull list to fill out a hunt. With some thrifty shopping you can take more trophy class animals then you think and get some good deals on adding some cull animals. You have any idea on your list yet?

Hi Alan

If it's your first time I'd seriously consider a management hunt. These off exceptional value for money. There is an outfit in the UK acting as an agent which are currently offering a 14 animal cull hunt for just ï½£1950 as part of a special offer. That's about $3000 to our American friends. This is over 8 days and 7 nights. It is also possible to upgrade to trophy animals and even 'part exchange' cull beasts towards a trophy animal, this results in huge savings because if you were to book a trophy species you'd be paying the full PH day rate rather than a subsidised package deal.

Now... I know this won't impress any hardened trophy hunters and will be of little interest to them, but it will give you an introduction to African hunting, you should also get to pull the trigger plenty of times. A couple of nights lamping is also included in the price and some species such as baboon can be taken for free if you're fortunate enough to have one present itself whilst you are hunting. this will not affect your 14 package animals at all!

After you've had this kind of experience you'll inevitably come away with a much better idea as to what you want to hunt, both species and location wise. I'm in the UK and have booked with this outfit myself for next year with a couple of friends as it's simply an unbeatable deal. Drop me a PM if you want any further details.

Cheers
MJ
