I want to check airfares. Can any one offer advice?
Thanks.

Archer

South African Airlines & Delta have directs flights

If traveling through Landon, Amsterdam, Dubai or Germany that is also an option to check out.

Don't know where you are located but JFK (New York), IAD (Washington, Dulles) and ATL (Atlanta) have direct flights to Joburg.

My advice?
Give Lori at Travel Express a call at 1-800-808-4868 or email her team@travelexpressagency.com. She will get you set up and take good care of you. You won't find a better deal.
Good luck and shoot straight!

A travel consultant may indeed be the best deal most of the time, or if you do not have time to search for yourself, however having plenty of spare time, I was able to save $380 by booking a trip myself, with no difficulty. To me that is worth it, as it is like a free warthog or impala, or duiker or...
Find an airline that you like or that has been recommended, and use the internet to find the dates, times, and price you like, its a lot of fun to see all the choices you have for travelling.

Delta offers a direct flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg. That saves the hassle and additional time of a layover in Europe. I would personally rather fly to Atlanta and change planes in the USA instead of in Europe if that is what it came down to.

I second this recommendation. The flights that she got for us were as cheap as we could find for ourselves plus she actually goes to Africa herself and knows the routine as she was in Namibia last year on her own hunt.

If this is your first trip and you are traveling with guns it is probably good to use an agent who knows the rules on how to take guns like Lori. After a time or two if you are comfortable you might try booking on your own. Best of luck.

Archer you can go to Cheapoair.com, Cheapair.com or Expedia.com to give you an Idea of flights from East Coast to Africa or as already stated call or email Lori for some ideas.

Get Lori for your tickets! (and the headaches that may appear later with schedule changes)
Go Delta from Atlanta non-stop to Joberg on a 777!
Take the first airplane out of your home town on the morning for ATL period (better yet go the night before if your connect to Delta is shorter than 4 hrs)
I avoid all travel through Europe with firearms. Just me I don't want the extra hassles.

I have been told that one disadvantage to flying Delta is the need for a layover in Joberg if moving on from there, whereas SAA arrives in the morning in time to connect with other flights.

ses- While that is true with SAA, I only fly Boeings. SAA does Airbus. I'm rated in of them and I've flown them and I don't like Airbus so I''l relax overnight in Joberg.

Thanks Cliffy. Do you feel there is any cost advantage for one over the other? I have heard about the bit of extra legroom on Delta.

Now for the 64,000 question. Which airline flying to Joburg has the most legroom for the economy seats. I did a Joburg to Frankfurt leg on a Lufthansa A380 and the legroom was less than on the next leg in a United 777 to Dulles.

I can only speak for the airlines I've flown in and keep in mind that I'm only 5'7" so I don't require a lot of room, but as far as leg room flying economy United is fine for short flights within the US, I just flew with Delta round trip to Alaska and on that flight flying economy the leg room sucked I would have been better off flying with United. now I know for the most part you can pay a few dollars more and get upgraded to economy comfort but that was not available as this flight had been pretty much booked and it was a last minute change due to my brother-in-law passing away so you get what they have. Now I have flown SAA 3 times to RSA had plenty of leg room good service and you don't have to pay for the extras during the flight so for me it's SAA.

I've flown Delta to Joberg twice now and I'm 6'1". The regular "economy" seats on the outside rows (the ones next to the windows) have given me enough room so that I have no real complaints on comfort. I haven't tried the extra roomy seats yet but I will if just for the extra recline. Most every Airbus I have ever ridden in has seats that were designed for a dungeon and not passenger comfort. I've never ridden in a comfortable passenger seat on an Airbus. In fact the cockpit seats are terrible also!. Whether it's Delta or Boeing that specified the seats that Delta uses for pax I don't know but they seem far more comfortable to me than anything Airbus has to offer. Even so It's on a Boeing (777) and not an Airbus. Just my .02 (cents).
Bob my good friend, sorry to hear of your families loss.

Boeing doesn't build the interiors or engines of their aircraft. Those are selected by the airline buying the plane. Boeing just installs them.

If you can afford it, business class is the best answer for extra space. In general, I feel that first class isn't worth the premium. There are three basic ways you can get one of these seats. You can buy business class seats, paying full fare ($$$). You can use miles to upgrade or to pay for your entire ticket with miles. There are also brokers who can get you discounted business class seats. I understand that the discounts can be substantial. You can find them with a search on the web, or perhaps someone on this forum has used one of them.

For international travel, I almost always buy a qualifying coach seat and upgrade with miles. It normally costs a bit more than the lowest priced economy seat. It isn't always easy, and can require some patience, but it works for me. It is so much more comfortable than coach. You have a good chance of getting some sleep on the seats that turn into a lay-flat bed. On a 12 - 14 hour flight, you can actually get a full night's rest. A lot of how well you sleep will depend on your own sleep habits. I am used to it and am able to sleep as well in business class on an international flight, as I can in many hotel rooms. In my opinion, it is money (or miles) well spent.

I'm 6'5" and my hunting buddy is 6'4" so we needed the extra room so we paid for the economy comfort seating. If I recall, they were $160 each way. I thought that paying an extra $10/hr. of flight time was well worth the extra leg room.
