Hey, this is Svar. I am 20 years old and thinking about getting into hunting. I want to get a .350 rem mag as my first rifle.

welcome and enjoy the site svar
hunting will change your life in more ways than I could list
let us know how it works out mate

Haha, thanks, sir. I wish to learn as much as I can. What do you think of my caliber choice? I am 5' 7"-5-8" and a bit underweight as I am dealing with an illness but my father says that when I get better we'll buy guns and start hunting together. I showed him this wonderful vid:

and he told me that he doesn't want to hunt as much, haha. He just wants to be with me and do things with me, he's not that interested in hunting. He's more of a fisher.

Welcome to AH Svar!

l like that video szar
the old shoulder would be feeling it after aday on a canon like that .
as for your calibre of choice , theres not much you wont be able to hunt with that , I suppose if your worried about the recoil you wont squeeze the trigger :)
once you punch through your illness you be unstoppable with the swine killing
sounds like its quite a problem in America
maybe you can alternate between your hunting and your oldmans fishing

Thanks for the welcome, Jerome!

Well, Bluey, the pigs are a huge problem in Texas. I'll have a lot of animals I wish to take in Texas: deer, hogs, nilgai, javelina, turkey, goose, teal, and sandhill crane. I'm especially stoked about the first two and the last one. The reason I decided to choose the .350 rem mag is because of this article by Robert Boatman, one of my favorite authors: .35 Whelen: overlooked, misunderstood, vastly underrated

I really like Robert Boatman and Gary Reeder. I have been reading for years and I am an Elmer Keith sort of guy. .333 caliber minimum with the exception of the .30-30 and the .300 Savage. I am looking at the .350 Rem Mag as my first but I would be happy with a 9.3X62, 9.3X64, 9.3X74R, .338 Federal, .444, .450, .45-70. or a .35 Whelen. Something in the medium bore to big bore range.

I would love to hunt in Australia, Bluey, where I assume you live. I know a few people there and will one day visit. Would love to tackle kangaroos, pigs, goats, donkeys, scrub bulls, and water buff. Not to mention camels and chamois and tahr in NZ! All of which could be taken with my favorite caliber. What I love about medium bores is that they are not too big for small game and not too little for big game.

young fella reeling off all them calibres some one on here will try to adopt you.... ha ha
sounds like you have it all worked out svar
many goals to kick mate ..and young enough to do it ..
theres a lot to hunt in Australia ,but everything is introduced except the kangas, you may want to look at the deer over here aswell .
a lot of deer hunters in oz swear by their 35 whelens .
personally myself im just a 30 cal type bloke .

Hahah, I suppose someone will come by. I really need some men with experience to take me under the wing and show me the ropes.

I can't believe I forgot about your deer population. You guys have six introduced species that are huntable, fallow, red, sika, rusa, sambar, and axis. Must be fun!

What kind of .30 cal do you use? I like the .30-30 and the .300 savage because I like the oldies.

I guess you are a go big or go home kinda guy.

Welcome to AH.

Welcome to AH! Buy a .35 Whelen, you won't regret it!

Thank you, Brickburn! Well, I guess I am hahah. If .30 is good, then .338 must be better, and .358 must be best!! Ahah, I just love the thought of having a short action .35 whelen in my hands. Also, all-around cartridges basically start at .35 cal from what I've been told.

So, I am curious. I have seen you before on these threads that I've been reading and I would like to know, how was the hunting in Hawaii? Did you manage to get any Vancouver Bulls?

Enysse, why would you choose the .35 whelen over the .350 Rem Mag? I like both rifles and would jump at the chance to own either of them.

Bird hunting and chasing goats in Hawaii. It is great fun.
Vancouver Bulls??

I would chose the .35 Whelen, it's a very respected caliber. Ammo is fairly cheap! Google Ammo seeker and check their prices out. I ALMOST BOUGHT one, but backed off since I own over +40 guns already.

Brickburn, back in the days of Captain Cook and those early explorers, there were these cattle that were given as a gift to the Hawaiian King. They soon went wild and feral and are similar to the scrub bulls of Texas and Australia. The Hawaiians call them "Vancouver Bulls" because they were given by Captain George Vancouver. You can hunt them with a special cattle permit in Hawaii.

Enysse, thanks for the tip off. I will chose the .35 Whelen as my first. There are some relatively cheap guns in that caliber online and I could easily get a deal. Also, it's easier to make .35 Whelen brass from .30-06 cases.

Welcome Svar! With this group you are sure to get a diverse group of answers to that question! Don't sweat the caliber of choice, it will only be your FIRST one. More calibers will follow, I assure you.... My two cents: I have had a .338 Win Mag for the last 30 yrs and I still love it. It will handle EVERYTHING you would want to hunt with the exception of Elephant & Buffalo (legal restrictions) With the knowledge you are already exibiting, you are already on the road to not only being a hunter but a "gun nut" too! Welcome to the club

What part of Texas are you in? I'm just outside of Houston in Hempstead.

Wes

Wes, is correct, if you get addicted to hunting. You will have more than one caliber and I own the .338 Win too and it super deadly too. And I just bought a 9.3x62 which is traditional caliber in Africa.

Thanks! Wow, Buff-Buster. I actually am living right IN Houston near the Medical Center. I actually live in North Texas but because of my illness I live in Houston.

"With the knowledge you are already exibiting, you are already on the road to not only being a hunter but a "gun nut" too!"

Haha, thanks, sir!

I like the 9.3x62. I am just starting out though and don't have a bunch of money so I want to get a gun that will be an "all-rounder". Something that will hit both the smallish Texas whitetails, stop hog charges, and take down nilgai. So for my first gun, I am thinking of the traditional "all-rounders" like the .35 whelen and the 9.3X62 minus the .375 H&H Magnum. The latter might be a bit too much for me for now. I actually heard the kick on the .338 Win Mag is worse than the .375 H&H Magnum because it is a sharp and brisk shot to the shoulder as opposed to the heavy push of the .375. Am I right? Is the .338 Win Mag not for beginners?
