You can take a 7 day 7 animal plains game hunt for about the same price as a Western Guided Elk and Deer hunt, and there all you are likely to get is a wet ass and a horse back ride.

I first went to Africa in 1985, and took my last Elk hunt in '83. After one trip over the big pond, I never hunter NA again, and have been back to Africa 19 times now.

Africa is a drug. Funny thing is wife and I had a bad exp. our 1st trip.
We decided to go back for hopefully a better exp. Well we now have 2 addl. trips planned out over next 5 years and #2 isnt in the books yet.
Seems like we are following a natural migration from plains game (1st 2 trips)
to the Dangerous stuff (trips 2,3,4) Leopard ,Buff and then who knows.
I really can't explain it but NA Game really has no hold on me other than the venision it provides. Africa on the other hand just calls in a way that says this is where you belong. goofy isnt it ?

I guess I look at things a little differently than most............Africa is like an incurable disease......one that never goes into remission. Not a day goes by that I do not think of hunting on the dark continent and how I am going to scrape together the funds for the next trip.

But..............I never compare it to hunting in North America. I have guided in all of Canada's western provinces and the territories over the last 30+ years and for most species of game found on the continent. To me comparing Africa with North America is like apples and oranges.

With guided hunts there is no question that you get more bang for the buck in Africa. If an outfitter in a remote northern area of Canada were to try and offer the same level of service and staffing that is found on your average Safari........well........the market would not bear it.

I was in Namibia for hunting in June 2008, 25 miles southwest of Windhoek and it was all but flat, steep downhills and steep uphills,some bush but a very longdistance sight. We saw the animals and they saw us asa You move the little finger.
My PH was Malan Lamprecht at ARUB Safaris, and he provide me a very exclusive hunt. I shot 7 diffrent spiecies at 5 days.
I was in Africa in the ealy -60s and get Malaria so I was not in Africa for medical reason untill now when I been so old so it does not matter anymore.
As soon as possible I will get back for more hunting in this fantastic land.

My first trip was single minded: Cape Buffalo! I used a CZ550 rechambered from 458 Lott to 450 Dakota. A 500gr bullet at 2400+/-fps did the trick. My PH trusted me enough to let me take the Buffalo at 165yds. He went down and never moved ten feet.

The next trip will be Kudu, Gemsbok/Sable/Oryx, Leopard and perhaps an Eland. As you can see I'm a sucker for the big horned antelope and Mr Spots.

First posting, heard rumors at AR that this site was a good one.
Been around there since the early beginning.

Been twice to RSA, and as folk says; once there, one is changed forever.
Getting the trophy shipment from last year in a month or so, like Christmas doing the unpacking.
Have started saving for Namibia in 2011, and also hope to be able to hunt for buffalo before I pass on to the eternal hounting grounds...

Why go ? Africa (the little I have seen) is so different from my local woods and wilderness.
the aboundance of game, the variaity, temperature, landscape, the history, the people...
Guess all of us who have read the classics in younger years have this urge to for at least once in a lifetime hunt the dark continent.

The downside is once you have been amongst them, you have to go back over and over again, and your kids inheritence goes down the drain!! but hey, it probably serves them right!

Why go?
It's warm (I live in Pa. I've frozen body parts on Pa Deer stands)
You get to dress in safari clothes
You ride around on a pickup truck with a gun
you sit around a campfire at night with your favorite beverage telling lies
They wash your clothes daily
the food is great
OK you are in a tent, but you are in a bed in a tent
you can see the southern cross
you have more than one animal on license
people look twice at your trophies
If your Wife comes along she will enjoy it, and you will enjoy her being there
everyone slaps you on the back and shakes your hand when you make the shot
South African wines are really good
so are impala, gemsbuck, etc
lions roar at night
elephants are really impressive up close
buffalo look at you like they don't like you - and they don't

Other than the above, because there is nothing else like it. I went to Botswana in 1998 with my Brother to get him off my back. I've been back 3 times and am planning to go back in 2011.

Why Go

I started reading J'OC 50 years ago and the flame smoldered. Reading all the PHC books along with Ruark made the itch unbearable. Only one way to deal with it was to scratch it big time.

The buff of Tanzania only made things worse. When I boarded the Plane in Dar for home I had only one thought, how can I return Upon returning from JNB after a great plains game hunt, I realized that I must hunt the Selous once again.

Thinking about why other than hunting, I recall reading an anthropologist who discussed genetic memory (the name escapes me). He talked about how we are usually very comfortable at home. As Africa is the cradle of civilization, we are returning home.

As the above post point out... it is THE place for great value and experience. You will shoot more animals in a week than some shoot in a lifetime. Where else can you go and have that much experience for the money?

Ray, My kids look at their African experience as inheritance... She (Africa) Has left an indelible mark upon my life. People know me because of Africa... of course because i was doing missions work and they helped send me. But its weird, no one seems to get over that. OF course me wearing khakis and courtneys all the time doesn't help..

I am counting the days until i return to live there... cannot wait...
