You will note the backs of the ears are the proper colour, as per photo.

All looks like hair slippage or damage.
Why it happened, who knows.
It was not prepared properly one way or the other.

The sad news.. It may be your cat but the taxidermy is not worth the money you paid to have it done.
(Which I think you already know.)

Bart I am so sorry for you that is the worst mount I have ever seen, I've seen kids doing their first mount in school and it would put that to shame. screw his Lawyers with a cat like that I can't see where he would have a leg to stand on. Please you need to name this Taxidermist or PM me and I will do it and leave your name out of it. Bob

Hi,
I am so sorry. I has to be a heart breaker. I have always wanted to see a sight like this put up a "wall of shamë". A place where bad actors like this can be verified and posted. We spend so much of ourselves (time , money, heart and soul) in our special moments not to help each other avoid bastards like this.

me 2 cent worth-Jerry

I totally agree with Zenbear and the others...this is not taxidermy!! That is a disgusting mess. No matter what the cause was, it should never have been mounted with a skin like that, let alone the messed up eyes, ears, mouth, whiskers,and all the rest of it. Even look at the
the feet and base...its an utter joke in its entirety!
Not warning others of where not to go, is a dis-service to us all, as if he got away with this crap once, he will keep doing it, and others will devastated as you are now. It is like a very bad joke, except no one is laughing, except maybe in that taxidermy studio
!

I'll keep my message short, I agree 100 percent with the guys above me. It's a crying shame!!!! The taxidermist should be ashamed of himself!

+1!
But this guy is no taxidermist.
That work is just a scam from someone that has no idea how to do taxidermy work.
He has totally destroyed that trophy, no matter if it is your cat or not.

I would not be worried about his lawyer at all.

Dear fellow hunters!!

I'm so glad that my original thought was not wrong. I'm going to make an appointment with Martin and he will do an expertise. I do not want to be wrong and put somebody on the internet who does not deserve it, so Martin will be the 4th taxidermist (and an independant one, not chosen by me) who will give his opinion. Than i'll report in this newsgroup. I might even add the original email with all the threats made to me.

Thanks for all your support,

Bart

And i want to add this to his defense. I also got a Kudu Shoulder Mount and a Nyala full mount from the same taxidermist. They are quite good. On the other hand, the livingstone eland shoulder mount has the horns it had on it when i shot it, but i seriously doubt whether the skin is fresh or from an older mount. We will know soon.

Hard to see a worse job !

Bart, I'm no expert... But I will be mad as a wounded Buffalo if my rooikat/lynx came back looking like that!!!!!!:mad:
When you come back to South Africa in April contact me via Alf Stoffels & I'll take you to a very good taxidermist!!! Be doing that I'll be able to monitor your tropies personally so that you be happy when next time you open up the crate containing your hard earned trophies...

Coming Sunday, Martin will see the rooikat and give his professional opinion.

When I read the title to this thread I thought it might end up as a Jerry Springer or Maury Povich "You are NOT the father" type of thing. Instead its of a totally botched taxidermy job. My condolences.

Here are the excuses sent to my by the laywer of the taxidermist.

We have now consulted with our client, and our client instructed us to respond as follows:

1. Your hunt took place during summer, with temperatures up to 35ï½°C;

2. No field preparation was done on your trophies, as is normally required after any hunt, especially since you hunted during summer;

3. Our client pointed out to you that because the field preparation was not done, the possibility of hair slip and a poor trophy, was highly likely;

4. You also were not willing to pay the normal fee, and pressured our client for the local fee and our client specifically told you that he will not be doing the taxidermy work himself, but that one of his workers will do it, to which you and the æ’¤H consented;

5. The gemsbuck skull perished after the cooking process and our client replaced it, free of charge, with another gemsbuck skull, to mount it according to your specifications. This is something that normally happens with skull mounts where the animal was taken down with a headshot, which means that our client actually did you a favour;

6. The caracal is indeed the caracal shot by you and the poor state, that you claim it is in, is due to the fact that the initial field preparation was not done;

I wrote the laywer that his client should state his name on the hunting form and start this discussion with the readers of the forum. So far, he does not dare to do it, but we will see.I can only give you the facts, facts which can if needed be confirmed by the people who were with my during the hunt, the films and the pictures made.

The rooikat was shot at 17.00 hours. In less then 20 minutes, it was put into the freezer and it was transferred in a totally frozen state to the taxidermist one or two days later. I payed 3950 RAND for a full mount. This was on his own list of prices which i still have and will scan and post if anybody wants to see it. I did not get a bill. My oryx was shot right between the eyes with a .300 win mag 168 grain Barnes TTSX Bullet from a distance of about a 100 metres. I was especially proud of the shot cause i know that in SA everybody shoots between the eyes, but we european hunters are not used to it.

Can anybody help me with the following questions:

1. If an animal is put within 20 minutes into a freezer, is that a totally wrong way to treat a trophee? In Europe, i have done that a lot of times and i never had a bad result.
2. The story that a skull desintegrates in the cooking proces when it was shot between the eyes, is that a plausible story?? The fact remains that is was replaced without me knowing it and i paid full for it, but let's start with the facts first.

These are the pictures of the oryx which was shot between the eyes. You can see the entry and the exit hole of the bullet. Does this look like a skull which will desintegrate when cooked?

.........

Bart when a bullet passes through a skull it can indeed shatter/crack.
It may fall apart when cooked.
I know of a case of a bear being shot at close range in the head.
The skull was boiled and the pieces were put back together like a puzzle after the fact. All present except the bullet hole.
It can be done.

Yes, it can fall apart and it can be fixed.
But the replacement skull you got looks like crap.
It is not properly boiled out and not whitened either.

If you put the Rooikat in the freezer 20 mins after it was shot, then the taxidermist has destroyed it.

I would have had the caracal skinned very fast, put if in a plastic bag after it cooled down and froze it. Sometimes, if you throw something in the freezer unproperly prepared. There will be problems because the heat couldn't excape.
