In February my good friend Nick and I drove the four hours from my home on the East coast, through the mountains to the West coast for a Chamois hunt, the goal was to get him his first buck. Our previous trip had been unsuccessful so this time we were determined to locate a good one. We had a mixed bag with the weather but hunted hard and after seeing a good number of animals we finally came across the buck we were looking for. After a short stalk we got to within 150 yards so Nick let the bullet do the rest taking the animal with one good clean shot. We quickly made our way to the animal where we were very happy to find we had judged the animal correctly, well nearly we thought it was 10 inches but turned out to be an even 9 7/8 so Nick couldn't be happier to have his first trophy. I caped out the buck and Nick sorted the meat and we headed for home to celebrate with a well deserved beer!!! Nine months on and I have just finished mounting Nicks buck, another week drying and it will be ready for the finishing touches and good to be hung on the wall.

Great mount !, well done.

In either their Summer or Winter capes the mountain chamois is a gorgious animal in a challenging hunting envorinment, especially so on the West Coast of N.Z.

Your thread has brought back many fond memories for me from a time when I was MUCH younger and MUCH fitter !

Thanks Marius
You will enjoy hunting the Chamois next time your back here, great animals to hunt and I especially enjoy hunting them on the west coast.
I had a look at your photos, looks like you were hunting on Rata peaks? Great little spot, Craig & Jan are good people to.
Happy Hunting

MountainEdge, Some beautiful pics that you posted, and it looks like you've done some great hunts. Nice taxi job on that chamois also.

I'm reading everything that I can find on your beartiful island, as my girlfriend and I just booked a hunt/trip there in March of 2014.

Mark you have a Beautiful Country that is High on my bucket list and one day I'm going to make it there. I have a friend Martin Bidois that was in the New Zealand Military that invited me down back in 99 one day I going to show up and see if I can find him. Keep posting those pics.

Good to hear. You probably won't have to much trouble tracking your friend down here, if you start asking around the military services.

Mark, great pics and vids. We booked with Gary Herbert.
