Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

Personal choices:
.22 LR - All small game
6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser - Goat to red deer
.357 H&H mag - Everything that walks!

And we have a winner!:first: I have done some counting (nothing better to do on a Thursday off work), including all honorable mentions and giving long, convoluted texts the benefit of the doubt:confused: unless they clearly did not describe a favorite caliber. Not surprising, the crown goes to our birthday guest,:birthday: the 100 year old ... (Flourish of trumpets):

.375 Holland & Holland Magnum:rockon::dancing::barmy::worship: with 31 votes,

followed by - a big gap!:whistling:

The other calibers, in order of votes, are:
.30-06 - 14 votes:second:
.22 LR - 11:third:
.300 Win Mag - 10
.270, .300 Weatherby mag - 8
.22-250, 9.3x62mm - 7
.223, .404 Jeff, .470 NE - 6
6.5x55, .416 Rigby - 5
.308,, 7mm Rem mag, .375 Ruger - 4
.22 Hornet, .257 Weatherby, .300 WSM, .303 British, 7x57mm, 7x64mm, .458 Win mag, .450-400 - 3
All other calibers got only 1 or 2 votes.

jeez that must have been a mission! well done! as its its birthday i wont ask for a recount

The top three were pretty close to my top three (had 22 WMR instead of LR, but I could live with the little 22 rounds) Some pretty good discussion, too.

I guess if I have to limit it to just 3 mine would be the 243 Win. 300 Win Mag and the 1874 Sharpes in a 45/70 (modern round).

Not counting the good old 22LR. I like the traditional calibers, no wildcats.

264 Win Mag (will shoot anything from 100gr - 140gr equally well)
300 Win Mag (Sako and Rem 700) One likes 165 TSX the other 180 Win Supreme Elite
416 Rigby (Hornady 400gr DGS & DGX)

I have thought about this for awhile because I am getting older and need to get rid of some of
the safe queens while I still have a clear mind. If I was going to travel all over the world and hunt I would own a 223, 30-06, and a 375 H&H. But I most likely will make a couple more trips to Africa for a few more plains game and maybe hunt brown bear in Alaska and a hunt to Canada for moose and caribou and the rest of the time I will be hunting on my farm for deer and turkey. I am not really a diehard conservative when it come to hunting rifles so I will probably keep my Remington 700 ADL 223, my 300 Ruger Compact Magnum and buy a 375 Ruger Alaskan

these are the ones i love
17 hmr
22/250
300 rum
aithough i just bought a packet of 375 hh factory loads (which im waiting for paper work to come back to pick up the rifle )and damn they look like theyre gunna be fun

If I HAVE to narrow it down to only 3, it would be:
8x68 S
9,3x64 mm
.450 Rigby Rimless

Hello, You know the 9.3x64 (Brenneke) ... Congratulation :thumb:... It's so rare, this ammo is too scarse.
I had had a Mauser in this cal. , better than THE .375 H&H but, .375H&H can be found everywhere, at every price not the 9.3x64....:(
That is the reason I sold my rifle.

does it suprise anyone else that this thread doesnt have over seven and ahalf thousand posts ....:p

I'll add one more for you. My top three would be the 30-06, 300 Weatherby, and 375 H&H. IMHO the 300 Weatherby is the greatest all around big game cartridge in existence, obviously excluding the largest of the dangerous game.

If I could only have three they would be:
25-06
338 Win Mag
416 Rigby

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges off all time
my 3 favorite cartridges are the one I killed my Waterbuck with is my favorite, 2nd would be the one I killed my Zebra with, and 3rd is the one I killed my kudu with. all 3 of those were 300wsm.

I have to ask, as a genuine matter of interest, how you came to this conclusion..?

hello ,
Why I tell the 9.3x64 Brenneke is better than the .375 H&H :
(dont confuse with the 9.3x62 Mauser)

Create to compete with .375 H&H ....older...

0 - The both ammo are very, very close ...diameter, weight, energy, quantity of movement,
accuracy ... but ...

1 - 9.3x64 case is shorter than the .375HH : need standard action 98 type only :)
2 - its Speed is faster : better flat trajectory, longer range, a fewer :thumb:
3 - Better BC for the 9.3x64:thumb:
4 - Better Energy (1/2 * Bullet Weight * square(speed) a fewer :)
5 - Quantity of Movement (Speed * Bullet Weight) are very close :)
6 - Cost per box in Europe is egual :)

That's all, not so bad vs THE .375 H&H Majesty .

I have had a Mauser Rifle with "Nickel" scope, mount : "Montage à crochet" (like "Suhl": very expansive, need a true gunsmith ...), (assembly with hook ???? I don't know the translation in english for "montage à crochet", "montage de Suhl").

The barrel was a 25" : metric 63 cm.

I have had a Rem. 700 Safari .375 H&H and now I have a Winch Mod 70 Safari Express .375 H&H.

I shoot about 20 cartridges each two weeks in this caliber and that from many and many years + other cartridges (.270w or 9.3x62 now).

Target : classic paper for accuracy and .. logs, bloks of wood (Diam : 10 to 15"), steel target (thickness 1", 1.1/2") range : 50 yds, 100 yds until 200 yds.

Results : More accuracy for the 9.3x64, better range, deeper hit but I repeat any BG will not feel the difference ...;)

Why I sold my rifle 9.3x64 Brenneke ?

It's very difficult to find this cartridge : :) RWS, Brenneke ?, Sako ? before it makes .366 Sako (9.3x66) , A.Square ??? and ??? :crying:

I am not sure about the perenity of this cartridge  which is , nevertheless, frequently used in East Europa for BG.

A curiosity :

so Docman have you warmed up your calculator?

:thumb: Although it's there, .375 H&H is still alive and shows everywhere its ability. I enjoy with it! :peace:

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
