Warne, Talley, or Leupold QD rings ?

Hello friends.

I will be scoping a 375 Holland, and I'm going with QD rings. I'd like your opinions on the three brands that I've researched for QD rings: Warne, Talley, Leupold. I already own some Warne QD rings and I'm good with them, but I want to put the best ones on my new rifle, and I've never seen the others in the flesh, so I'd like to know what you guys think, and use, and why.

Ever since I found Warne rings, I don't do Leupold. The Warne rings use four screws, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom, coming in from the side that allow the rings to kind of float into the tube of your scope. So long as you've got the "key" on the bottom sitting properly in the Weaver base it's pretty hard to screw up the alignment. The only down side is when you're inexperienced with them it sometime feels like you need an extra set of hands when you're assembling them.

For the QD version of the Warnes you just do this setup once and then clamp down QD screw. If you're shooting a CZ or a Tikka with the dovetail bridge you don't even have to use bases.

Now why I prefer this over the Leupolds. First the Leupold's use only two screws coming down either side from the top. On non-QD type this required setting the bottom piece into the base and kind of eyeballing / hoping that they're in line. You of course drop the scope into the bottom half and can kind of tweek it from there. Can you get it right without tools, I think so. But in the end you still have this situation where one half of your rings are fixed. Again with the Warne's not being fixed on one side, they "float" into proper position. And again the Leupy's use only two screws. But the Leupolds don't require that extra set of hands, they're easier to work with from that perspective.

Now that said with the Leupold QD style, you may be able to achieve the same thing by just turning the screws in enough to have the rings snug enough to stay in place and then removing them from the bases.

The Talley's from what I've seen utilize the same basic design as the Warne rings. I've never heard anyting but good about them, but I've also never heard if or why they're better than the Warne's. They're also quite a bit more expensive than the Warne's. They may be better but I've never read why.

I change between a 4-12x40 and a 1-3x20, using Warne QD's, on my .375 and have only good to say about the Warne rings.

I have Warne QD rings on my 375 H & H.

When i asked different gunsmiths and at different gun shops the answer was almost 100% Warne rings...

So ask around to your reputable rifle smiths, what they would recommend.

Pretty sure all would serve you well. I own two of the three you mentioned, and I have no complaints about either. I unlike the rest do favor the Leupolds though. Warne and Leupold QD rings are both built to last.

That EAW technology looks very cool. But, I cannot see the lever for the quick detach feature. I saw it for break rifles with ribs, but I didn't see it for mauser style bolt guns. Are those also QD with levers ?

a Friend of mine have these mounts on his 375 H&H that has the mauser actoin. He will shoot a video of detaching his scope and of how the EAW system works... I'll post the video on youtube and put the link up here...
The EAW system keeps its zero for 10 000 shots!!!

Edward picked this up now, I have the same on my 375 (mostly used by clients) works well, clients often remove the scope for which ever reason they prefer on a hunt and it Zero's right away I have had them on for roughly 3 years with no issues.

Actually the EAW design works best on a bolt rifle and is very popular in Europe. On double rifles and drillings the best solution is the traditional claw mount. Not cheap, but amazingly durable and always returns the scope to zero.

Red Leg i am with you on that .the claw mount is my favourite type of mount and i have it on my 9.3 double,.300win mag, .416 rigby and a .223 with iron sights. it is quick and doesnt move, but as you say its not cheap and you need someone who knows what they are doing to fit it.

The only person I have used in the States is J. J. Peradeau (sp?) at Champlin Arms in Enid, OK. With my weakness for Germanic guns, he has done a number of rings for me for pre-existing claw bases, and did beautiful work on a couple of double rifles. Claws are wonderful things.

Of the three, the Talley's are probably the best. The Warnes are a close second. I own both and they are very solid. I just put Warnes on my 375. The leupold are a distant third...my father ownes a pair. I find the levers to be small which makes it difficult to open if the levers are tight. Many high end rifle builders use Talley such as Kenny Jarrett and McMillan. Some have mentioned EAW. I have no experience with them but generally the Europeans make great stuff. I do know that they are very expensive...something like three time the price.

I used all 3, broke a leupold lever but it was when they first came out but they do not have postive lock on the lever and can get bumped loose, so I only use them on my bench gun only, Talley or Warnes ford chevy you will not go wrong.

Ed, the video you posted of the EAW mounts was great. Now I see how it works. My guess is the machining and finish is very good, something which I appreciate. My guess the reason I've not seen them before is because I live in the US. I'm going to research them more closely. Thanks Much Ed.

I’ve used all three plus Alaskan Arms QD rings. The Alaskan are probably the best but they only make them for certain rifles. I love everything Leupold but if I had to pick one for you I’d likely go with Warne.
