I just heard from my Medicare Advantage insurer that the only coverage my policy helps with would be Emergency Room charges only. Everything else is out-of-pocket to me. Gulp. Does anyone sell med coverage while I am there hunting? About 10 days. What say you? Thanks...

No doubt someone will sell you insurance.
Start the search.

I've used Medjet Assist.
Not medical coverage, but evac insurance all the way home.
That can keep the costs down.

Have you looked into global rescue?

If anyone still needs any info please feel free to email me at memberservices@globalrescue.com or call at 800 381 9754

We would recommend that a client has both travel insurance and Global Rescue.

What Global Rescue offers that others don't:

1. Immediate access 24/7 to critical care paramedics when you call Global Rescue, you will speak immediately to a critical care paramedic. These are the people that can triage your case and have the power to make decisions in the critical early minutes of an incident. You are able to call Global Rescue 24/7, no matter how minor the issue and get expert medical advice.

2. Johns Hopkins Medicine All medical cases are reviewed by our in-house physicians and for a serious incident, we have immediate access to the Division of Special Operations at Johns Hopkins Medicine. You will have some of the best specialists in the world reviewing your case and making sure that the best decisions are made.

3. Field Rescue Global Rescue commits to its members from the point of illness or injury. Our medical professionals are empowered and qualified to make an immediate decision as to whether an evacuation is required. Whether by helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft or by ground, we will commit to you from that point. There is no requirement to get yourself to a medical facility in order to be assessed to determine whether you warrant an evacuation. The trigger for an evacuation is that a member requires in-patient hospitalization. Global Rescue will evacuate to the member's home hospital of choice and provide up to $500,000 of services.

4. Deployable Personnel If a member is hospitalized overseas for more than short period of time we will deploy one of our paramedics to their bedside. They will act as a bedside advocate and liaise between local medical teams and our medical teams (including Johns Hopkins) to ensure that the correct decisions are being made.

5. Integrated response to both medical and security emergencies Our in-house security teams our comprised of military veterans, many of them US Special Forces. As with the paramedics on the medical side of things, our members can get advice during a security incident 24/7. These personnel will be deployed worldwide to support local assets during a security emergency. Examples of recent Global Rescue security operations include Haiti, Egypt,Japan and Sudan.

6. Track Record - When push comes to shove in a serious emergency we have proven our commitment to our members time and time again. It is not in the small print but I truly believe that our DNA is different from an insurance company. We don't look at every case through the eyes of a claims adjuster but rather medical professionals prepared to do what it takes to assist our members. Insurance may or may not protect your wallet during a serious incident but Global Rescue will protect your life.

Some important benefits that insurance offers that Global Rescue doesn't

1. Lost Baggage/Personnel Effects cover

2. Trip Cancellation Cover

3. Cover for the costs of medical treatment this is important and is primarily why we always recommend members have an insurance policy to cover for this. Global Rescue will provide up to $500,000 of evacuation services but we do not cover the costs of medical treatment.

Hi Everyone, my name is Tyler Green and I work for Global Rescue. Since Brian brought up our services, I want to make myself available to answer any questions.

BRICKBURN, thanks for posting such detailed info on Global Rescue.

GaryO,

Let me know if you have any questions about the information BRICKBURN posted. Our memberships start at $119/week and provide coverage for up to $500,000 worth of your evacuation costs from the bush back to your home country hospital of choice. Unlike other providers, you don't have to get yourself to a hospital and be be certified by a physician prior to evacuation.

A question I posed to my insurance company. What a surprise I got. I have medical coverage in Africa! There is a in Network clinic/hospital in Pietermaritzburg in KZN where my base camp is. Also, to many to list, in Network clinic/hospital in Johannesburg and I have the names and addresses. Three in Pretoria. Who would of thought! Good thing I called. Non-participating I am covered for EM-room only at 80/20. In-patient I need to get pre-authorized but should not be a problem, even have a collect phone number to call. What service.

Now in Namibia I am not so lucky. There are no in network clinics/hospitals.

One things is, to have a good credit card or two or three if you need services or hospitalization and are not covered by insurance.

In Africa, hospitals are called clinics, just to clarify that.

I had global rescure when I went to Namibia. My federal blue cross said I would be covered there like I am here. Where I was at in Namibia seemed a whole lot more accessable than when I hunted elk on horseback in the Bridger Wilderness of Wyoming. It would have been tough getting out of there if you were hurt bad. They say that Namibia medical care is on par with western Europe. So I quess it is up to the individual.

I recently went to Zimbabwe on a cape buffalo trip and I got a policy with Global Rescue beforehand. I highly recommend it, since they will pick you up wherever it is needed, be it in an emergency room, or out in the bush. A policy for the two weeks I was there did not cost very much, and was well worth the peace of mind that came with it.

IMO Global Rescue is much better than Med Jet. They will come get you just about anywhere.

However it is not medical insurance as per the original post. If you are having a heart attack you cannot be evacuated to the US for treatment. Same goes for many other accidents or illnesses. Check with your health insurance provider. Buy rider or separate policy if it makes you more comfortable. Some policies will reimburse you for hospital stays abroad but it will be out of pocket for you until then.

Yes, thanks Mike70560, i wasn't trying to imply that it's regular insurance. I'm sorry if I did. It will help defray the costs of a serious emergency by handling the evacuation, but you may end up needing a special policy to handle treatment abroad.

There are several people in serious need of head transplants today. We left early, 2:00 AM.

It was good fun. I will get a list of the award winners and post it soon.
