just came across this jerome, and at least they have it right in one country unless the policy has been changed since you put this on here .unfortunately i somehow dont think zim or zambia will return to the shoot on sight policy.....:(

Not a lot of debate in a Monarchy.
Certainly allows quick action.

Zim has never stopped the shoot on sight policy as far as I know....anyone armed found in an ICZ may be shot on sight still!

yeah but the EX minister didnt like it for some reason...me thinks he has an ulterior motive....

Eye laddy, me thinks yer rite. Why else, 1) a system that was working, 2) government steps in and fixes/F***'s it up.

thats good to know. i think they stopped it in the national parks in zambia due to the only non black politician thinking it was barbaric. he does have very left leaning tendencies though i believe.... also something i have never understood, as far as i understand in zambia is that if you did "hurt" some poachers when anti poaching in the parks, it was the first to make it to the police and make a report who then became the plaintiffs!! so if the poachers got there first it was the game scouts who were the aggressors :confusion:

Sounds rather similar to modern day American "justice."

Ahh stumbled upon this thread thought one country had decided to issue licenses - and keep the AK if you get one !

but the ones who buy the horns-hides for mer pennies to the dollar and sell for huge profits go scott free, if they are subject to the same instant death if caught with products from poaching it may be stopped. i have seen with my own eyes the abject poverty some are forced to live and die in africa.

I think the shoot on sight is a wonderful idea and should be instituted in all countries. it sure put a stop to poaching in Swaziland and if it eliminated a few poachers in other countries the problem would be much reduced. They should go after the dealers as well. They are as guilty as the poachers by paying them to destroy wildlife for a few bucks (no pun intended).

Sadly, in Africa with corruption the way of life , nothing will happen. The dealers will buy off the officials and life will continue as usual while wildlife suffers.

The ones who really need to be shot are the middle men, leadership, political elites and oligarchs, primarily Chinese, who knowingly demand, bribe for and pay for this illegal plunder.

Amen. The best way kill a snake is to cut the head off.

Poaching does indeed slow down a lot with the kill on sight policy. And lest one feels sorry for for the poachers bear in mind that they know full well what they are up to and the consequences thereof. These are full on contacts and game scouts are shot too. The poachers think twice when they pay for it with their lives, but not at all when they spend a few days in jail and return to it without delay.

As per the video, and this article https://www.nikela.org/shoot-kill-policy-saves-rhino-swaziland/, shoot on sight, at least in theory, means that the rangers can shoot or use deadly force on poachers if they have fired at them first. I.e. in self defense. These are common rules of engagement for most LEO agencies. I would imagine if you started shooting at say cops in Norway, they would most likely and justifiably respond in kind. However shoot on sight would imply that rangers are allowed to fire at any suspected poachers, even if they did not fire at them first. This is very problematic.

I mean North Korea and Saudi Arabia have draconian legal systems and very little crime. They behead, shoot, and stone people in public. Sometimes for fairly minor crimes or infringements. Despite the low crime, these are not places I'd want to live in. You know freedom and due process are kinda important at least imo...

The issue that the ex-minister in the video raised was that these anti poaching squads are apparently going into the villages and shooting suspected poachers or people who killed wild animals that left the reserve and attacked their cattle etc... If the reserve has large predators i can see how that can be an issue. The ex-minister also seemed to have a problem with how much power this Reilly fellow was given. When you give someone the power of life and death over other humans it is understandable to want that person to be subject to a great deal of accountability. Whether that ex-minister was bothered by this because he has ulterior interests- i.e. bribes from poaching syndicates or because this issue is actually occurring and bothers him is unclear. Either could be a possibility. That ex-minister could be in the pockets of these syndicates. At the same time a lack of accountability could lead to rangers adopting a heavy handed approach.

I would also assume that the foot soldiers of poaching syndicates and especially bush meat poachers turn to this profession out of desperation. Probably a lack of employment and food insecurity is to blame. I would assume most of these people live in fairly abject poverty. They probably have little to lose. The leaders and the Chinese who consume these products are probably pretty rich and have a lot to lose. Likely this is the head you want to kill.
