Well, my 13 YO neice just shot her 1st moose the other day, hunted the hard way, on foot in a horseback only wilderness area. I was fortunate enough to be there to help her. The well above average temps sure put a damper on the rutting activity and despite hopes of a rut crazed bull tearing up the country and grunting with every step up to point blank she has still never even heard a moose call. The bull slipped in silently to my call and just appeared at 60yds. 2 shots 2 animals so far for this budding hunter!

nice moose...

what area were you in?

very nice Moose!, It's great to see young hunters like her off to a great start, a proud uncle I'm sure.

Well done Diamond! Please tell her congrats. Her smile says it all by the way.

First, congratulations to your niece.

Second, this post is great that it has a pic, but inadequate in that you didn't say where the hunt took place, or what caliber was used (so we could debate the choice of bullets), or the rifle manufacturer.

Congrats to your Niece on her first moose! now whens the cookout I was just telling deb this morning that some moose or bison sure would be good. Makes me miss Alaska.

Thanks James.
We were in the Wilmore Wilderness in west central Alberta. We have been hunting in there for 16 years now.

LOL I knew I forgot something... the controversy!

I am sure Bart will shudder as i write this but it was shot with a .243 with 100gr partitions. Her dad backed her up after she shot but the little .243 did a good job and, although way undergunned for moose, would have quickly killed him with no help from the .308. She is shy to shoot anything bigger than her .243 we were not taking any chances. I am not argueing since he dropped in a perfect spot that we could ride the horses to with no issues (read no packing!) LOL

Thankd Bob

Gotta love a good moose steak. Mmmmm Moose steak, how can you tell I am writing this while waiting for supper. LOL

This bull hardly had any odor to him at all, almost no evidence that he was taken in the middle of the rut. I am sure he will be very tender and nice, we have taken some at this time of year that were harder to chew than my hunting boots!

Congrats to Paige.
Moose are sucks.... .243 did the job.
Make sure you rinse the sun tan lotion off the Moose it spoils the meat.
It was 27C ... Not ideal.

Nice moose! Love the 243 Win!

Nice moose! Love the 243 Win!

Thanks, I have very little experience with the .243. So far She has had a pass through at 125yds at a 200# Whitetail and this shot at 60yds broke a couple ribs and stopped under the skin, I wouldnt want to test it out on a big leg bone or shoulder blade but behind the leg works just fine.

tell you niece congratulations excellent first moose . I have hunted the grande cache area for elk with my cousin . 243 great cailber to start with maybe next will be a 7mm-08

LOL You may be a mind reader! My Bro wanted to get her into a 7mm-08 for this hunt but she was not comfortable stepping up yet, maybe next year.

If you dont mind, who did you hunt with? or did your cousin guide you? There are some nice Elk up along the Big Smoky river.

congratulatios to your niece
