The All Around Rifle Caliber....

Just build it, enjoy it and don't care about a bit of velocity loss :)
It will not matter much out to 300 meters anyway.

If speed is important, you should have 26" barrels or longer for most "fast" cartridges.

I was wondering if anyone had a reliable formula for adjusting factory advertised muzzle velocity for shorter barrels

I was thinking (like I need to stop doing that) that a handy little 375 with a 20" barrel and topped with something like one of those holo sights might be a really nice "truck gun" for those evening rides down the pasture.

I love the cartridge, there are 4 in the rack and 2 belong to my daughters so its kind of a family staple

So, anyone have a thought?

.375 ruger alaskan? ;)

Ditto the Alaskan. I love mine and am getting 2600 fps with 300 gr North Fork bullets in the 20" barrel.

The 375 H&H is a fantastic caliber, but, The 9.3's, and the 338wm all loaded with the proper bullets have produced very similar results, KE as the 375's... There is a diference, but not by much. Happy B-day 375H&H....

Though not on the same platform, but I am sure would be close would be the 35's.:p

i do love my 9.3`s :D . and my .350 rigby gets me in the .35 club as wel :p:whoo:

I have always wondered about the 375 capstick.
From reading, it just seems like a fast 375.
Maybe I will have the fortune to play with one someday.
I think it would be interesting to shoot it along side my 375h&h and compare alittle !

Hello,

I have and used: 7x57, .308 W, 30-06, 9,3x62 and 375 H&H. And for a few years, not now, a 7x64. Without having planned I have basically rifles/cartridges with the same external ballistics. I don´t need to make a click in my head because a drastic change in trajectories. I found this a bonus.
About the all around cartridge between them, I must said I would chose the 9,3x62. It is the one I have used the less, until now, but for my needs I see it as the most versatile.
The basic bullet, to me, is the 250 gr. The real basic is the 250 Accubond. I can move to the 250 TSX/TTSX/GMX or my most recent 258 H-Mantel, without any sighting change, for different animals. Also I can use the 220 grs if I want something faster and a little flatter (no too much flatter) trajectory. Or go to some various 286 grs for "heavy work", like feral cattle. But any of those thogher 250 grs are perfectly adequate.
In my case, it is not only the cartridge but the rifle-cartridge combo.

Best!

CF

375 Capstick....my oh my......I think you read too much.....
I was honestly thinking it might make a great brush gun with a short barrel.
If the shorter barrel slows it down to the speed of a h&h load, im good with that.
I like my 30-30, also have a 308 shorty. But wpuld like a little more punch withput adding considerable recoil.
...maybe I do read too much... haha

how would you consider the 250 gn barnesx for cattle?
bruce.

Long live the KING.

I just sold my 416RM in favor of a 375H&H because it is just that good. It's a sweet spot of enough gun (for a client, not a stopping caliber) and mild recoil. IMO - perfect.

Short Barrel  Well why not? A magnum .375 is, after all, just like a .308 with the added advantage if you didn't kill them, the muzzle blast might stun them long enough for a second shot in all that thick cover. Though do be careful in the dry season - don't want to start a brush fire.

I seen a lever action 500sw available with a 16in barrel. Looked nice. Might be too much gun.
The 357 or 44, is probably a great option !

For what? I am serious - for what would such a combination be useful?

Until this guy posts something on pay it forward free I would avoid him at all costs.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.

Hey pal! I'll take all the .375 bullets if they're available.
Thanks!
