Can any of your online Safari Companies advise this
Greenhorn from Australia what game would be
appropriate to gain confidence and NOT get the PH
killed?

What 'game' are you looking at ? PG or DG ? Most new hunters will cut their teeth on Impala, Springbuck, Warthog and such like..but any good PH will get you on the shot of your choice without much of a problem. Your ability, proficiency and skill with your rifle will be judged and discussed with you before your hunt begins. This is what makes the 'planning' of your hunt so much fun..!

All game (PG & DG) is with in reach...provided you have hunting skills to go with.

What rifles do you have and what are you comfortable with shooting...

If you have a 300 - 338 or 375 you will be able to go after any game on the African continent provide you are able to shoot it reliable.

You and you alone will be making the first shot and that sets the stage for any follow up and possible problems from that point on. So stay with in your shooting skills.

What is your goals and what length of safari are you looking at going after. Forum members have a wealth of information and ready and willing to assist you in your safari planning.

While you are correct in that greenhorns add a stress level to any situation, they need to stay with in there skills kill zone.

I like your response about rifle skills.

Don't be intimidated about going to Africa and only hunting Impala, or Black Wildebeest because of your experience level. Go with an open mind, be truthful with your PH, and practice, practice, practice your shooting skills. Then practice some more with shooting sticks. I spent about 14 saturdays testing loads, and snap shooting.

I'm open minded about what my PH thinks I'm capable of. And I would want to see a client shoot and see how he handles a weapon before we went anywhere. Thanks DOCMAN greatly appreciate the feedback.

Hey Diamondhitch. I was only talking to a friend of mine that guides for hunters over here looking for red deer (they are classed as pests over here because the damage they do to fences and national parks). He was stating that if he had the chance to go to Africa, even if he didn't get anything, it would be the experience and the journey that would live in his mind forever. Thanks Mate.

6mm has a great piont to practice with the stix ,when myself and youngest son kody went there in 2010 he was rifle shooting and i was stick flinging we didnt know what to expect .and felt a little intimadated , he was only fourteen then and was using my 3006 and had hunted many deer in australia but had never used the stix before and had to practice on the first arvo (arrival day)we were there for a 10 day hunt and by the end of the first day were completely and ease with the p.h and the whole camp staff. we were hunting plains game and kody took to the african bush hunting like a duck to water in fact we sent him out for two days armed with just a camera to slow him down a bit .
he still emails his mate the p.h and is now trying to save for his next african adventure
so dont have any ill thoughts of what might be these guys are used to looking after idiots like us and will do everything to make your hunt the expirence of a lifetime , the whole time teaching you anything they can to broaden your knowledge and testing your ability and bush skills .

Right off the bat James, I like you. (I'm a John Wayne Fan too.)I totally agree with having the hunting skills to get in close and making that first shot count. I used to do a lot of bowhunting over here on wild goats and pigs, so stalking isn't the problem. I believe that if you can't kill something outright, morally you should'nt be there. As for the rifle, I'm trying to tame and bring to heel a Ruger 77 African in 9.3x62 Mauser. I would expect myself to get within 50-100 metres of game if I can before I took the shot and that would depend on cover and wind direction. Perhaps I've said to much. My Pappy always said to me,"It's better to look a fool, than to open your mout and remove all doubt. Thanks Heaps James.

Thanks 6MM. What is coming through the posted comments are Practice,practice,practice. I fully appreciate what everone is saying and I totally agree. If and when shit hits the fan you want to be pretty conficent that you can handle the situation as well as making that first shot count. At the moment I'm getting over a broken back after a woman hit me on my motorcycle, so I get the wife's car load up the rifle and head out to the range, but I'm having a recoil pad installed to ease the jarring on the back. I was told I was spineless, now I have the scans to say I'm not...ha..ha.

Thanks Bluey. I've dreamed of going to Africa ever since I was a kid watching old movies on TV. It's not only the hunting, it's the atmosphere, the people, the smells, the picture as a whole. Sitting back on a chair having a mint julip and watching the sunset feeling relaxed as you see the sunset and listening to the wildlife with the smell of that sun backed earth filling your nostrils, only matched with that contented feeling after a good days hunt and exchanging dirty jokes with your PH. Ahhhhhhhh...

youve got the whole idea in that very statement .the smells in the bush over there are something i will never forget and the sunsets and sunrises are pretty cool but it they are short lived ,i think they have the shortest twilights on the planet.the atmospere is as relaxed as it get anywheres and the sounds are spectacular

Welcome.

Gain confidence? Most PH's start you at the target range and quickly assess your habits with firearms.
Then look at your aptitude for accuracy with the firearm.

Then they go to work getting you a decent shot at whatever it is that you take a fancy to hunting.

Bushbuck (PG) can kill you so can a Buffalo. Wound either and just jump into cover after them and the result can be just as bad.

Practice your shooting skills as suggested and follow your PH's suggestions/instructions and you'll be fine.

Look at some pictures of the critters and see what you fall for. The list to choose from is huge!

There are plenty of reviews of hunts on AH, just start reading.

in may 2010 we went with dries vissar safaris in the limppopo area near thabazimbi they are awesome we took twenty one trophys between us and like i said we took the gun off kody for na couple of days but the photos he got were trophies them selves
in august next year we (wife and i )are going to do a ten day hunt with roy wormald in the east cape area his website is at www.wormaldhunting .com they had a wicked first time in africa deal going when i booked you might want to check it out
my hunt wtih him will be a combo (archery ?rifle )deal
but from what ive learned from this site and just typing to other outfitters they are pretty much all very good .
it just depends on what your got your sights set on .
if my naggon draggon wasnt comming this time i would have opted to do a bow hunt weith dries agaian in mozambique this time
but the strife wants to do sum touristy stuff so thats why we are going to soth africa again (gee its hard )ha ha
i am getting to far off land now so will be losing internet soon
but hey just start looking around its the start of a great adventure and you will not regret it specially the dollar is at the moment
i truly think where ever you decide to go it will be great and you will make life long friends and hunt some great heads
i will type to you when the boat gets service next
