I believe the largest kudu ever found (a pickup) was found in Mozambique some years ago. Something around or just over 70 inches. Saw a picture recently of one that had one horn about 70, the other was much shorter, so something of a freak. I have never seen in 6 trips to Africa a 60 incher, let alone 70, nor do I ever expect to see one that big. I was tickled pink to get one over 50 after 4 tries. I turned down a couple shots at bulls around 52 in Zim last summer. I just didnt really see the point when my last was 51.5 inches.

Look at this thread: MONSTER KUDU

Kudu measuring 72.5 inches...

This was the one I was about to find for you.
I'd say he is a bit freaky.

As Ses is noting, I think that anything over 60 inches is like a "hen's tooth".

So where does one go to get a 60 inch Kudu?

Wherever you happen to be when you shoot one. Could be anywhere.

I know about one place in SA(Matswani Safaris) where a 64.5" inch Kudu was shot in 2010.
Seen the mount myself.
In 2005 the SCI record Waterbuck of 92 3/8 measured in 2008 was shot at the same place.
I talked with a Danish agent for them last year and he said that the place has plenty of 55"+ Kudus.

I have no idea how they run their operation and if they stock it with farmed animals or not.

Maybe someone here have more knowledge about them.

If you are willing to put in the time/legwork we have a free range area in South Africa that one can find 60 inchers. It is a physical hunt in the Soutpansberg mountains in the Limpopo Province.

i agree with ses. i was hunting zim one time and the operator moved us from one camp on the property to the main lodge because he wanted to put a german booking agent in our camp. think he thought he was doing us a favour as well.. we had been looking for a big kudu and had seen some nice ones. he came to see us the next day and told me the agent had shot a 60 inch kudu in the same place my ph and myself had been looking, and if hadnt been moved would have been back to that day. so unfortunately in 20 odd years that is the closest i have come to the magic 60 inches!

I've been seeing a particular Kudu bull, at regular intervals, for the last two or three years now. It must be pretty close to 80 inches, yup, you heard me..80 inches !! Every time I get settled for a shot, my wife wakes me up to go to work..! :biggrin2:

Yes your 70" is nothing but a pipe dream.
Realisticly if you can bust 55" you have killed and awsome bull.
If just have to have 60+ inches i would turn to the farms in the limpopo province of RSA.
The PH i hunted with had killed a 60" with a client the year before and they had a hunter in camp after one paticular Kudu. They had trail camera pictures of both animals coming to waterholes and could estimate the size of both. Of course hunting and harvesting one paticular bull fairly will be quite a feet.

There is a picture in one of the newer issues of Sports Afield of a 72 inch kudu. One horn is that long, but the other is smaller. It is impressive, but a bit freakish.

Is it the same one at the top of the thread or another one?? That would be surprising if it were a different animal.

a 60" kudu is basically the holy grail! It is like shooting a free range 200" white tail or Mule Deer. They are out there. One has to put on a lot of miles & have a little luck to boot. I think there may be a 70" kudu out there but your odds are very slim!

I will mention, SS Pro Safari...they have been shooting kudu over 60". I know a few other places, but this place has them!!!

I think it was the same animal, but a different pose.

I have heard the Soutpansberg Mountains can produce some 60+ kudu if you are there during the rut and maybe cautadas 9 or some of the souther Mozambique areas if your lucky
If you're willing to hunt on a ranch hunt there are a few outfitters that specialize in 60+ kudu

I've hunted specifically for 60" kudu on 2 safaris for 15 days each. I hunted the prime areas of limpopo each time. Each time there were supposed 62" to 64" kudu in the areas. In those two trips I have taken the following kudu. 53", 55", 58 3/4", and 59 7/8" so technically I've never taken a 60" kudu but I have got close. I do however know of areas where you can be guaranteed kudu in the 64" to 65" range. they are raised in 20 acre paddocks and aren't exactly a difficult hunt. If you are just wanting a wall hanger you can consider this. However if you consider that then I can just put you in contact with the owner. He can shoot the kudu for you, have it mounted and shipped to your front door. That's why I've never taken these guys up on those offers.

I would say your best chance for a large kudu is the Limpopo Province in RSA.

I have seen some beautiful animals there, but no 70 "
