P1000929.jpg:) Hello from Pennsylvania. Have hunted South Africa three times and am heading back this October for my first Cape Buffalo hunt. My son and I hunted Kwazulu-Natal region this past April and ended up taking a monster Common Reedbuck. Looking forward to any words of advice you veteran buffalo hunters may have to offer. Best regards and good hunting to all.

Welcome to the forum, it's a great place to be. Looking forward to hearing you wisdom and the post and pics of your buff hunt. I visit the Lehigh Valley area twice a year. Scott.

welcome TO THE forum

Sorry I have no buff wisdom (hope to some day). But welcome to AH and can't wait to get your report and pics in Oct!

Every buff hunt is different. No expert but I have taken two, both with the .375 H&H. First took total 3 shots, two from me and one from the PH also a .375. First shot was high but not a spine shot, ran off, took two frontal shots and down. My second buff was flattened with one Hornady 300 gr solid at over 140 yards moving away, neck/shoulder junction shot. Never wiggled. The .375 is ample if the shot is well placed, minimal if not, but a gut shot buff is a gut shot buff regardless the caliber. Try to get close enough to be certain of your shot, the first one is most important. Try to talk to your PH before the hunt about back-up. Some PH's are a little quick with the helping hand, but dont expect him to not shoot if your shot is poor or you are standing around admiring your first shot, reload quickly. If he is on his feet keep shooting until he is down. Practice your offhand shooting both with sticks and without until you can place all of your shots in a 6 inch circle at about 75-100 yards. Have fun!

Welcome to AH! good luck on you Buff hunt.

HEY Gemsbok42
I have only taken one buffalo and that was in Zimbabwe last year and I am far from an expert. I used a 375 H and H also and took my bull with one shot to the lungs. The only advice I can think of is to shoot a second or even third time if the animal is clear of others and it is safe to do so.
Does your moniker mean that you have taken a 42 inch gemsbok?
My one and a half cents, cheers, Mike

NICE Reedbuck! Congratulations.

Where are you hunting Buffalo? RSA, Zim, ??
Cows or Bulls?
What are you hunting with- Rifle or Bow? Calibre

4th trip, Lets have the rest of the pictures of stories please!!

I would suggest some off hand shooting at 30, 20 and 10 yards too. Six inch square on each target..
Shoot one shot into each target in a progression getting closer to you in under 15 seconds.

Have fun!

Welcome to the forum. Can't wait to hear about the buff hunt.

Welcome to AH! Congrats on that huge common reedbuck...I'm jeolous of course!

Welcome to the forum, Gemsbok 42.

First of all, congratulations on your reedbuck.

As for the buffalo, I ve only shot one, with a .375HH, a single bullet to the neck, and he was down, dead on the spot.

So my advice would be, just take it easy and shoot well.

Welcome to AH Gemsbok42!

Hi M. Egan,
Thanks for the Buff advice and yes I did take a 42 1/4 Gemsbok which the PH claims was the largest ever shot on that concession. Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time and lady luck smiles on you.

Welcome to AH!

I've only shot one buffalo. My advice is pretty simple....keep shooting until the son of a bitch stops moving. Welcome!
