I came across this picture and had it around for a while. I have heard a story about it but want to know if anyone can tell me the real story!!

I saw that movie, thought it was pretty good. But i don't remember any big rifles with scopes in the movie?

Clint was using a dbbl rifle not a bolt ,I just mentioned it was a scene similar..

I do not know the story, but if I had to guess , I would say that they both walked away. If you look at the elephant , you would see the ears are pushed out for display, signaling a mock charge and probably stopping right in front of the hunter. If the ears were tucked to the side of the head, it would have meant that the photo was taken during an actual charge. All I know is that I am glad that I am not the hunter or the elephant...

I think it is a posed photo with a taxidermist mounted elephant head.

In charging, an elephant can have the ears out or in, and a mock charge can often times be pushed through into a full blown charge.
If it was that close, and moving, there should have been a shot fired or there would have been some guava pulp. No ways a mock charge stops that close without some blood being spilled IMO.

It was a brilliantly shot movie just viewed it again last night , you can watch these movies again & again . Mogambo, Snows of Kilimajaro, African Queen & King Solomons Mines are Classics. The new era movies which are good to view are The tale of Africa, In the Shadows of Kilimajaro, The Ghost & the Darkness and many more.

Lets not forget Hatari!, The Macomber Affair, and The Last Safari. Funny thing about Hatari. Of course its a John Wayne movie but when I was in Tanzania in 1985very near where the movie was filmed, another hunter in camp, an Austrian chap said Hatari! was a "Hardy Kruger movie!" and not a John Wayne movie! Hardy Kruger of course is German and played the lead driver in the movie. A matter of perspective I guess.

Oh Yes ! I miss out on Hatari, a great classic , and I have grown up seeing this movie & dreamt of Africa as a kid. John Wayne was another master acter & had lots of inclinations towards hunting with his custom Weatherby Rifles ..300 Weatherby Magnum was his favourite. I very much enjoy looking at that photo as it takes me back to a previous moment in time. With my rifle shouldered I had a very similar view of an elephant bull in the seconds before I squeezed the trigger for a frontal brain shot at a mere ten paces.

The face to face encounter before the shot was truly a great sight which has been indelibly printed in my memory for many years. What a great photo.
