Hi A.H. members
I'm an Australian and avid hunter. Have joined the site to gain information on hunts and reloading advise for my recently acquired Sako 85 in 375 H&H mag. Look forward to hearing from new and experienced others in the hunting community.

Welcome to Africa Hunting Cam76!

Good selection of rifle sir, and sure there will be many on this forum that would be willing to share information on reloading. A expert in my eyes is for sure Tarbe.

I have Purchased some RWS unfired brass and Barnes TTSX 250 Grain BT projectiles to develop a load, but am having difficulty finding any min/ max start loads for this weight projectile. If there are any experienced reloaders out there i would be grateful to hear from them. Advise i have had so far is that Reloader 15 is a good choice of powder?

Welcome to AH! I worked with the 250gr TTSX's in my .375. Very accurate bullet and you should be able to get it easily into the 2800fps range or higher. I used Hodgdon H4895 and Varget. The H4895 was a bit more accurate.

I have on a couple of occasions found the Barnes manual to be a bit on the hot side. If you can find one of there manuals or go to the Barnes website, I would use the starting loads for the 270gr TSX and even them perhaps a couple grains less. That may seem a bit extreme, but it should be safe. Work up in 1/2 grain increments.

If you have a chronograph, I'd make use of that too. Once you cross the 2800 fps range, then it's really time to pay close attention to bolt operation and how your brass looks.

Thanks Phoenix Phil for the advice, have the Barnes No 4 manual and have checked their web site. There was no listing for 250gr ttsx in 375 dia loads. Will see if there is a local source of H4895 or wait til someone can help out with an RL15 min/max charge. Thanks for the advise on the chromo, i will look into buying one!

65gr of Re-15 will be a safe starting load for your 250gr TTSX.

Max will vary and should be approached with caution while watching for signs of high pressure (case head expansion, bolt lift anomalies, primer condition, the last being the least reliable IMO).

As stated above, a chronograph can really help you understand what is going on with your loads. They are too cheap these days to load without one!

I bought mine as a young Marine in 1978. It cost me a month's salary!

I would concur with tarbe's recommendation. My loads were in the 72gr range for H4895, so 65gr should be a good starting point. Here's a thread on my results:

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
