Wanted to get your thoughts on Namibia vs. South Africa for Leopard, Cape Buffalo, and Kudu. I have been blessed to hunt in SA three times including this last time for Cape Buffalo in the Timbivati. I am now addicted to Cape Buffalo - probably a must hunt now on every subsequent visit to the Dark Continent. This time 2015/16 I am interested in Leopard and Monster Kudu as well. Any thoughts or considerations I should take in preparing for my next trip. I plan to spend three weeks on this next trek.

Thank y'all as always for your thoughts and guidance.

I think they are kinda equal? Between hunting in the Limpopo, KZN and northern Namibia they are different. It's probably a little more money to hunt them in RSA, but I hear they use lights too and it's illegal in Namibia.

Thanks Enysse. I am also considering the additional time required to travel to Namibia, but would be nice to see another country. Any outfitters in Namibia you would suggest?

Well there is Jerome's place and Jame's the Hunt Agent above represents a good place in Namibia.

Really do your research! These hunts can be hit and miss. If you look at a list Namibia outfitters, a lot will say they hunt leopard but look at how many days it took. Some times people are lucky too. It seems some people carry a lucky rabbits foot everywhere. I'm hesitant to mention anyone.

The outfitters in the Limpopo will bait a lot to pattern a leopard down. Plenty of outfitters on here sell those hunts.

Thank you. Will have to start my research and great place to start Jerome. Thanks for your guidance.

Consistent Leopard permit acquisition is the issue in both countries now.
Lottery draws in either the provinces or the country.

How does the draw work? Are certain outfitters based on land concessions (size/number) benefitted within this process?

I do not know every system. I just know there is a lottery in place.
They throw their name in and get drawn or not.
RSA does not even hunt their entire CITES permits allotment.
I am also not privy to the entire political agenda involved.

Limpopo selects from the applicants. They have a process for reissuing permits if they are not used.

KZN, if I recall correctly, has 5 Leopard permits for the province. Try and get one of those.

It's definitely political. If an outfitter draws a permit, it's a big deal. Some really big leopards are in RSA. Tap (Tony) got a nice one in KZN. And there was a bigger one that outsmarted them.

You should look into Zimbabwe too.

Hello DT,
why is the young PH wearing a pistol ?
Foxi

Foxi,

Not sure why, but he also had a .375. My thoughts is you need all the protection you can get when up against Black Death!

Dtarin09,

If you do not find what you are looking for here among the excellent selection of safari companies and PHs, send an email to big5game@worldonline.co.za (Hannes Swanepoel in Limpopo District, South Africa).
It is hunting season so, be patient, he will eventually return your email.

I have hunted with him 3 times and also shot and hung some baits with him for an in-coming client.
Multiple leopards hit on one bait and quarreled over it.
The client (Fred Parent) shot a huge tom shortly after I left for my return home.

I have seen leopard during bright daylight (I think they hunt in shifts there, lol).
The buffalo in my avatar is from the last hunt I enjoyed with Hannes (Baruli Concession, open to The Kruger Park).
In normal years he leases hunting rights to about 500,000 acres.

Good Luck,
Velo Dog.

No worries, and good luck to you.
