Hello,
Tiss from Milwaukee, WI here. I have hunted the U.S for 25 years and am now trying to turn my "African dream" into my first African hunt. My reason for joining this site is, as I'm sure many of yours is, to get help weeding out the good from the bad; to find out the truth about costs, outfitters, rifles, vaccines... I could go on ad nasuem, but I am positive you all know the questions a newbie has.
Go Badgers!

Welcome to AH, I was in Milwaukee just this morning.

welcome to AH tiss kovosky.

the closest ive been to Milwaukee, is watching reruns of happy days .
good luck with turning your hunting dream into a hunting adventure , you've come to right place for weeding out the planning garden

Welcome Tiss! I was in down town Milwaukee once a long time ago.... Africa should be a breeze to you! At least you can shoot the Baboons in Africa. Go Vikings!

Just kidding, I know you actually have a great football team... but they really do let you shoot the Baboons! Or at least shoot at them... They are usually running full tilt through the bushes.... Um, come think of it that is about the same thing I saw in Milwaukee after all, only I think it was dumpsters instead of bushes.

You will love this site, it is chocked full of everything you wanted to know about hunting in Africa, and even the stuff you don't know that you want to know!

Welcome to AH Tiss, it is great to have you with us!

Like ActionBob mentioned, you might have the opportunity to shoot at one! They are plentiful, and FREE!

Well, unlike enysse, I was not just in Milwaukee. But I was born there!

Welcome Tiss. Enjoy surfing around and learning the ropes. This is a great place to learn how to avoid some big mistakes!

Hey- do you know why Iowa and the Dakota's don't have pro football teams? cuz Minnesota would want one too then! hehehe I've heard babboons are on the list, once I get some idea of priority species prices, and a detailed budget I'm going to look at some of the "extras" (cervals, cervets, hyena, feral dogs etc) and see about turning the barrel red after the real trophies are salted. so yeah, I've got a ton to look at still (and living in tosa, we don't get too many og the ghetto thugs here. its still discouraged to be black in the suburbs

whereabouts? i'm in tosa by the zoo

Good one about the football team. I hadn't heard that one before! But I can take it....

I meant nothing racial about the baboons. It was meant purely as a dig towards your fine city in general! I was downtown decades ago for a convention and being fresh off the farm was completely out of my element with the combination of drunks, beggars, various entrepreneurial people in the pharmaceutical business, the "business" women, and the guys who appeared to think of themselves as "managers". I don't remember any specific colors.

If you really want talk about colors, you're gonna want to put one of those blue ball monkeys on your list as well.... I know there are just too many ways that whole discussion could go...

Now seriously about the baboons in Africa; I went over there with absolutely no intention of shooting any primates. But after a day and half in country, I decided that those damned baboons all need to die! Especially the one that felt he needed to announce his presence to everyone within earshot of my bed every morning at 3:57 AM! And then there are the ones that sound off right when you spot a big old Kudu bull.

Put a Black Backed Jackal on your list. If you have time, talk to your PH about trying a predator call for one. Otherwise they are left to chance... And you will be looked down on if you see one and don't kill it! They are possibly hated more than baboons. Both should be free unless you want to take a trophy home. If you have a bar in your home, you really need a mounted baboon smoking a cigar and holding a no smoking sign.

Oh, oops. Its a common term heard around here. I separate the good from the bad. Here's another one- why do they only have small lightbulbs in the metrodome? cuz the vikings always lose the big one!
So a black backed jackel huh? Are they the coyote of S. Africa ? I have heard that night hunting for predators can be wonderful- I know the farmers around here love the sound of a .22 or .223 in the night. One less song dog stealing profits! As for the "other" species, I haven't decided what I'm going to do. I have a VERY long list of desired animals (everything from small cats to THE cat, from impala to elephant. The problem is that Uncle Sam hasn't been keeping his promises about jobs and economic growth, and the Packers don't know I exist :(
So the final decisions on kill animals will have to wait until I get there. Oh, and here's another one
whats the smallest room in the metrodome? THE TROPHY ROOM!
Go Badgers!

Yea you could say the Jackal is the Coyote of Africa. We never tried calling nor night hunting as our schedule was very full. My Jackal was one of opportunity we just came across. But if it was arranged ahead of time I'm sure it would be accommodated.

If the economy and a job is holding you back, better reconsider and take care of business first. But if you are going and going on a budget, it can be done and done very well. First thing you might want to consider is how many mounts, if any, you must have. Decide where you are going to put them before you go and know what you want skinned out and how you want it done. A rug might be a great option for more animals than you might think, European mounts, and just great photos are an option. On the actual hunt with 15 trophy animals in 9 days, we will spend 1/2 to 2/3rds again of what the hunt cost just on Taxidermy and the whole process of getting them home. Generally smaller animals are cheaper to mount and fit in your home better.

Then consider the animals you take, take a couple things you really want but are more mid to low priced. East Cape Kudu are not all that high priced and are nice Trophies. Gemsbok, even female, Black Wildebeest is a really unique and impressive critter and can be had for about $900, give or take $100. Duiker and Steenbok are cheap but challenging. Springbuck are a blast and common's are plentiful, as are Blesbuck and Impala. A Trophy Wart hog is challenging to find and economical, in some areas Bush Buck are economical enough and can be real challenging and make a great trophy. And look into a package deal.

What is your job? I'm betting it is not comedian or comedy writer. ;)
