Thank you Sir!

i got to reading some stuff and thought i seen factory boxes and have none. never buy factory ammo. i had more like the gray ones they were supposed to fit the 300 wm but they don't so had to use the larger blue ones. I only have 80 of each caliber -- going to namibia -- looks to be their limit, also just the ammo comes in at 10lbs 8 oz not including the weight of the cases and the pelican case.

delta says 11lbs of ammo max and the ammo is less than that just not with the cases.

I made sure before my flight that my interpretation of the weight rules were on record with the airline: It is ammunition weight, not the combined weight.
I kept at it until I found someone who agreed and made sure the note was on the file.

Depends on the person you get at check in. (Which pisses me off.)

Good luck.

I have delta's rules printed and highlighted, it states ammunition must be 11lbs or less.

I have the weight of each round written down also along with individual weights of everything.

these last 7 days are going to get hectic i can just see it now trying to get everything done.

thanks again for the input the reason i love this site.

It is the 1400, I tried using my 1200 but i just couldn't get all 160 rounds in it so i bought the next size up.

BD,

I think you should re-weigh all of your ammuntion and individually tag each round, color coded of course. This will help to keep you busy over the next seven days..... ;) Enjoy the anticipation!!!!

I have been accused of being anal before :D

just don't want problems and i love to win arguments and disagreements :p

Well I am sitting in the Delta Sky Lounge at Atlanta
Waiting for Delta flight 200. We checked in at a regional airport this morning. We were not checked on ammo and no gun inspection, just a card signed that the gun was unloaded and initialed by Delta agent. A walk in the park. I was ready for the third degree...nothing, did not even want to see the ammo and container or weight etc.

I'm sitting at a desk in ATL, working.... :(

Travelling with guns has been easy with Delta, in my experience. Admittedly, that has always been here in the states, but it doesn't surprise me that check in is the same for international.

Here is another option to drop a little more weight.

Instead of using the individual cases inside as you've done.
I took the shell holder portions from inside the MTM cases and cut them to size for the P1200.

You'll note the two different cartridge sizes in the photo. 80 -300WM 50- .270 win.

Yes i have a 1200 and i put some grid in it but i could only get 140 rounds i want to take all 160 i am allowed. so i stepped up to the 1400 and they fit no problem .

thanks for the input many have said they haven't had issues I hope i can say that in the end.

You can probably use the same methodology in a 1400 to reduce the weight slightly. When I tried to use the type of ammo sleeve you have packed my weight went over the limit. Hence my solution.

In all my flights I have only had my carry on weighed once and it happened to be under weight so I was fine.
Never been asked about the ammo weight ever. Just the number of rounds when I enter a country.

So, unless you get a rule freak or some random enforcement day at the airport you are likely going to have a breeze flight.

Best to be prepared.

Have a great time.

i almost have my bags packed going to finish tonight and i am weighing them all, my gun case is at 44lbs.

if my large case is close to the limit i will put the grid in the 1400 to save some weight, i do know the ammo cases weigh right at 2.4lbs

thanks again for all the help and ideas.

Brickburn, great idea for your ammo case. I just got model 1150 case in the mail this week. I'm not sure how much ammo I am going to take with me, but I imagine I can get more than will be necessary for my trusty 30-06.

<i love to win arguments> Yea me too, but how realistic is that statement when dealing with Airline personell?

We ended up on Delta, Air France, and South Africa Airlines.... Delta was our initial check in and it was a breeze but I think we got a real decent lady checking us in. She asked about the wieght of the ammo and I told her that the ammo itself was well under the limit and she accepted that.... We just used pistol cases I had and one was pretty heavy and with that would have gone over a bit.

On the way back Air France was our check in and they did weigh the cases and of course we were ok because we shot up half of what we took, but they wanted it under their limit including the cases. I left partial boxes at camp but with the ammo shortages brought the full ones home. Next trip I may take a little less.

Better to have too many than not enough. I left all my extra at the shooting range in camp when I returned:)

On european airlines, the limit is 5Kgs. Case+ammo.

And you are not allowed to carry ammo in your riflecase or luggage.

we are flying delta from atlanta to joberg. good to get all the advise, worst case i have to take a few out but I am not too worried. and on the way back it should be considerably lower, may leave the 300 win mag with my ph -- was told he had a 300.
