Animal welfare groups have sounded alarm bells on provisions in the newly enacted wildlife management law, which in their opinion appear to create loopholes for sport hunting. The Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (2013) legalize the killing of excess wild animals and harvesting of wild game for a range of products.

"We are opposed to any form of cropping. It has been tried before and failed because it is prone to corruption, mismanagement and abuse. It is likely that owners of game ranches may crop and cull animals beyond the list provided for in the Act," said Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) executive director Josphat Ngonyo.

The new law, assented to by President Uhuru Kenyatta last month, further provides for local processing and sale of wildlife trophies from animals that have been cropped. Although it retains the ban on sport hunting and bush meat trading, the Act which came into force on January 10, 2014 it provides for culling and cropping of surplus wildlife in game ranches for their products and trophies.

Kenya banned sport hunting in 1977. Since then around 70 % of the country's wildlife was lost, which is undoubtedly not a good track record for the hunting ban.

They just have to disagree to create a headline.

I am thrilled that someone has figured out how to write a piece of legislation that might have a hope of creating a cash flow so the local farmers and citizenry might see some value out of saving MOST of the animals vs having most of them killed off.

This is where the disconnect from reality happens

"......... the wise and sustainable use of wildlife can be consistent with and contribute to conservation, because the social and economic benefits derived from use of species can provide incentives for people to conserve them and their habitats."

IUCN

Imposing a preservationist (1st world) view on a community that does not derive a direct tangible benefit from preserving the habitat or the animals in it will not fly with people living in poverty or close to it.

These people need to get in touch with reality.

You would think the tree huggers and buffalo kisser would see how putting a monetary value on an animal is a good thing by now. It promotes better conservencys through better hunting and game management practices. I feel sorry for our youth of tomorrow due to the ignorance of the agenda driven greenies.

They just have to disagree to create a headline.

Sounds about right...

Must be hard for an animal welfare group to see that hunters actually have the animal's welfare in mind

As we saw with the "three amigos" case though, many of the "animal rights" people believe - and some will say openly - that they would rather see animals extinct than killed for sport. "Animal welfare" doesn't even enter into it.

Hank you are speaking the gods honest truth. Most people in this great world ( and yes I do believe there is greatness in this world) have lost touch with reality. The sad fact of the matter is it will take all of the technological advances we as a people have had to be wiped out for them see that what we as hunters have been trying to preserve was the right way.

If the truth meant anything they could look at the facts and see the benefit of hunting. The money that is put into the areas for the people and the animals is tremendous. Truth will set you free, lies and hate will forever keep people in poverty and in the dark. If the real truth came out it would not be as profitable and as politically advantageous for those in power.

Hello Each One,

Those bawl-babies are not emotionally mature enough to appreciate the truth.
They are fueled by immature thoughts and very strong / arrested development type emotions only.

Case in point:

Dinner party at my house 3 weeks ago.
One person there we hadn't met until his wife brought him to our party.
He started out as a Biologist but has been promoted during his career, a couple times and now is a big shot with a large US Federal agency.
At first glance, one would think such a man should have a reasonably high IQ.
No dice.

After a couple glasses of wine, he jumped up on his soap box - so to speak - and began a hellfire and brimstone style "sermon" about Global Warming, especially how people had better wake up and stop burning fossil fuels before it's too late, etc., etc.
They of course drove to our house in an automobile, yet they live less than a half mile from us.
After a few sentences from this character, you could have cut the tension in that room with a saw.

When he finally paused to inhale, I tried to make light of it all (and hoped he would realize his bozo-nono, for dinner party etiquette sake) by quipping that "according to the fossil record, the earth has cooled off and heated up several times without our help and, shouldn't we be happy it is warming up instead of cooling down?"
He scolded me that the problem now is that it is warming way faster than it ever has before (guess he is a few million years old to know that or something) and that's a real problem.
I said "OK, don't have a cow about it, especially not on my carpet".
His wife (a Doctor and a fine person over all) cringed.

There's more to the party pooper story but my point (finally!) is that facts and reason have absolutely nothing to do with this Earth Worship religion / anti-hunting philosophy, that is sweeping the industrialized nations.
I submit here that: "You cannot reason with unreasonable people".
Or: "You cannot teach a pig to sing, you'll only wear yourself out........and it annoys the pig".

Our only hope is to raise our children well and to gently lead undecided people toward the light with facts/statistics/truthful history lessons.

The man at my party is a obviously a religious zealot (The Earth Worship / Green Movement faith-religion) and likely will not be awakened, ever.
However, his wife was noticeably uncomfortable with his faux pas and hopefully will put him on super secret spousal probation if they ever get invited back (she is a peach but he is a wiener).

Over and Out,
Velo Dog.
