AH Members,

What broadheads have you used while hunting crocs? Bowfishing and alligator equipment excluded. Good and bad experiences welcome.

Also, what is a pass through on croc akin to? I don't imagine the bones to be a particular problem, but are different areas a difficulty? The scutes seem tough but I hope for a broadside hit. The skin on the sides seems penetrable enough but does it cause unusual amounts of friction on entry/ exit?

I don't intend this to be a two blade versus four or kinetic energy versus momentum question. A comparative answer like, "similar to a pass through on a ...", would be great.

Thanks!

this is only the way I think , no facts. and absolutely no experience hunting crocs in any way
if you have plenty of poundage id use the widest cutting broad head I could find .
reason the big poundage ,beside the obvious thick scaly skin ,is that they are usually laying flat with all the weight bearing down .
unless you were lucky enough to get a broadside shot as your croc was walking .
in the only video l seen of hunting crocs in Africa with a bow . it was night with the aid of artificial light .
and the croc was walking out of the water towards a bait . he was maybe 10 feet long .and of course there was a string attached ,never seen a float ,but figured there was one there .
the hunter was using a 100 pound bow , the same video he took elephant and hippo .
he was using german kinetic 2 blade b/h.
lwould love to see the 14 foot lizard that jacos boys took with their bows .
the size difference in those four odd foot would nearly be twice the weight , id imagine .

Dirt Nap Gear sells a broadhead that would probably work too but I think bluey is spot on with his advice.

Thanks, I never considered its own weight bearing down.

good read thanks ,mate.

Has anybody seen Steve in action? It looks like he is busy shooting gigantic lizards. No recent posts that my knuckledragging skills have discovered. Was he referring to broadhead type when said, "a expandable". I'm guessing it was supposed to be, "and expandable". I would be surprised if he used some type of mechanical.

l read it as ,he used mechanicals .
you've got me wanting to try this now .
great refrence to preferred shot , quite a ways back and high .
in this video l keep referring to the croc was back in the water in an insistant .
can see this thread being around for a while .

I could see a while back you were intrigued bluey. It would be an interesting hunt in Moz where the crocs grow old and big.

I would be a bit concerned about mechanicals for this hunt. Some of my friends like them but I feel more confidence with fixed.

Sounds fun doesn't it? See you at the water's edge! That has got to be some kind of feeling watching your croc crash into the water. The minutes after must weigh a ton!

Moz was on the itinerary but we decided to head north after the hunt. Maybe Moz or Ethiopia for the next lizard. I can already see that I will be hunting in Africa at every opportunity.

The combo hippo/croc hunts in Moz are probably the best deal going right now. There are some minor obstacles/costs to get in and out of Moz though.

It is an interesting hunts as you say Enysse unfortunately none of us..........received any quota on hippo this season.... Not a single outfitter.

Even if we did it would still not be exportable, I have it on reasonable Authority that they are working on the issue but as you know Africa has it's own time.. :)

My best always

That is interesting Jaco, hard to believe! You think it would be pretty easy to fly an airplane and count hippo and type out a quick report. How hard is it???? TIA

There can't be a shortage unless some unknown poaching force is completely wiping them out.

very intrigued enysee, oneday maybe Mozambique would be my choice for this kind of hunt .ley me know when your ready to go eric .

im a rage fan rooihond ,but id definitely stick a big assed fixed 2 blade b/h , inbetween the ribs of an ancient old crocalizard mate .

We gotta get Moz's hippo regulations fixed up first, heck I might be a physician assistant by then.

nice title mate ,:thumb:and blody well earned .

don't know about hunting a hippo  not sure id do that
if l did it would have to an on land deal ......
but the croc , is now on the list .

Well the only way I would want to hunt hippo is on land too!!! No sniper shooting, up close and personal.
