I just phoned the local Cabelas to see if they had any .270 140gr TSXs in stock so my wife could pick them up while she was in the city. The GUN counter guy asked "what are those? Bullets?" ??????? Really? :bonk:
Since they were out I phoned Wholesale sports and asked the same question from their GUN counter guy and he asked "who makes those? Hornady?" ?????? Really??? :bonk: Heres your sign.

Where do they get these guys? I know all these guys aren't rock stars but come on, they should at least know something. Shouldn't they? The scary thing is, these are the people advising others on gun and shooting purchases.

tough to get good help when they pay minimum wage, might as well have called Walmart
The only time I get good service at these big stores is with a part time middle age guy, he is working part time to take advantage of the company discount, or the older guy who enjoys all things outdoors but doesn't want to really work anymore, but wants to still be active and involved with the outdoors

That's exactly what I do when in store - head straight for the bored retired guy who just wants something to do all day.

Well just to be different, My most recent Cabela's experience was just the opposite. I went there after checking stock on line to pick up a spare cylinder for a black powder revolver. I found a nice young girl who wanted to help, told her what I wanted and that I could not find it. She looked it up on the comp and it said IN STOCK. So she asked the "bored old guy" who pronounced with great authority, "We dont stock those". Oh really?! The little girl says, well the comp says we do, Oh really says BOG. He then turns around, opens a low cupboard door and lo and behold, well, whatayaknow, the cylinder "we dont stock"! I told the girl she was smarter than her boss!
BTW, if minimum wage people would show a little interest in their jobs and show some ambition, chances are they wont be making minimum wage for very long. Everybody has to start someplace you know! Everybody I ever knew started at the bottom and worked their way up. I started at $1.60 an hour in the mid 60's.
Trouble is nowadays is everybody thinks that starting wages are 100K a year. Wake up folks. You start at the bottom making minimum wage until you get with the program! Rant over.

When Cabelas was still privately held and they only had a few stores, I found their service/help to be as good as one could ever hope for. Then they went public and retail stores started popping up all over the country. With that massive expansion they of course had to hire more people, it seemed like that's when I started running into people of no use or limited use at their stores.

I find it hit or miss, sometimes it's a very positive experiences like ses mentions above and other times more like the Diamond's recent experience.

I agree with you ses, I really saw that a few years back. All the young punks that had just gotten out of high school and straight into the oil boom were instantly making big bucks, and spending big bucks, jumping ship for a few pennies more and such. When the recession hit they sure got a quick shot of reality, they found themselves out of work and unable to find work due to all those burned bridges on their resumes. Many lost houses, 5th wheels, speedboats, fancy vehicles and everything else they had financed up the wazoo, most of which treated the situation with an entitled attitude, like someone owed them a good job. Its a hard lesson to learn.

After college it took me 4 years to break into my field and the rest of my career to get where I am today yet I still encounter many young workers bent on fast tracking to my level. For some reason they don't think it is fair that they cannot start at the top.

Just yesterday I had a guy ask me how to get a "job like mine". I replied "its simple, work hard for 20 years and make the most of your opportunities". Like all the rest Im sure he was looking for a shortcut or someone to talk to to make it happen instantly. I wish it was that simple, I would have done it long ago.

But of course on the other hand, we only just recently had Cabelas come to my home state with stores, one is only 40 minutes away. Before that, mail order only.
And per the minimum wage thing, who knows what they pay individual employees? As an example my daughter who graduated culinary school last year has been struggling like many people to find a good job, hit and miss. She recently made app at a place nearby that appears to be up and coming, and wham, got hired. She loves the place and expects to be paid minimum wage, at least for a while, and is happy as hell about it! Ya gotta start someplace, and verrrrry few start at the top or anywhere near it. Its gotta be earned.

Reminds me of a time years ago. I was working as Mate on an ocean tugboat. We were in Astoria OR, to pick up a barge, and the owner of our company delivered a cook to us for the trip. Now this ass clown rookie, didnt know the sharp end of the boat from the blunt end. I dont think he had ever set foot on a big boat in his life. He came aboard, looked around, set his gear down and asked me, "Hey man, how long do I HAVE to work here before I get to be Captain?" I nearly s#*t myself right there on deck! When we got off the ocean a few days later, wintertime!, he got off and never came back! Way too much of this kind of thinking anymore. Way too much.

alrigh , you pair have pricked my ears .
how many people work in these cabales stores ?
the biggest gunshop ive been into had 3 blokes working there
minuim wage ,don't know much about that , in my work its percentage of catch .
but the same thing we just give the new guy a starting percentage and tell them their share will go up as they learn the job .
best incentive l use is telling them im gunna pay em what they are worth .

Cabelas employes a lot of people, no idea how many per store but quite a few. And you're right on the pay scale. I fished for my dad commercially way back when, got a percentage of the take. Last time I went out with him when salmon fishing was lousy, I didnt make bus fare home! When my dad was in the tugboat business independently, I worked off and on all one summer, 1966, in Alaska for him as cook and deckhand. He paid me $75 which was probably more than I was worth!

You want action at Cabela's, Dick's or any other publicly held company? Don't send a complaint to customer service. Send an email to Investor Relations, tell them you're a shareholder and how you were treated. Ask them why? I had an issue with a Cabela's and did just that. Next day I got a phone call from the manager of the ENTIRE store apologizing for the incorrect info I got on the phone from a sales "associate". Short story, got an extra $100 off the shotgun I originally inquired about and eventually purchased from them. Company employees usually don't ignore the "owners".

Depends on the store. Our Cabelas has 2-4 running cash, 3-6 in guns/hunting, 2 in optics, 2 in fishing, 2 in archery, 2-3 in camping, 3 in clothing, 2 in customer service, 1 in the bargain cave, 1-2 in the fudge shop, 1 running the hot nut stand, 1-2 greeters and 3-4 more roaming around the floor, The Bass pro has probably 1.5 times this many at any given time. They are big stores. Now that I stop and figure things out that is a lot of people! and I haven't even mentioned management, purchasers, accounting etc.

damn ,you wouldn't fit that many people in a gunshop around here
the bueaty of having everything a fella needs in one shop (supermarket)
don't l need to check one of these places out
in all these cabelas stores is there a biggest of the biggest in the the chain ?
if so where ?
its going on my bucket list

fudge shop ????
is that like a café?
and a greeter , is that a fancy name for a store detective /security ????

Don't worry-once Obama raises the minimum wage you're sure to find smarter people back there

Im not sure where the biggest is but the fudge shop is just that, a booth that sells fudge.

Greeters have the VERY important job of standing by the main entrance saying "Hello, welcome to Cabelas". LOL I don't know how they would function without this critical role.

We like to hit the drive through ammo store before a good drive by shooting! LOL

Don't laugh though I wouldn't doubt that at one of the bigger stores you can actually get items installed on your truck, boat quad, etc.

There are still people that think off shore drilling is something the Marines do! I went into a restaurant with my girlfriend at the time, who happened to be Russian. The waitress upon hearing her accent asked where she was from. My girl promptly replied " I'm from Russia". To which the waitress replied " OH really!! I have never been to that State before". That my friend is where this country is headed.
