Besides hunting for biltong (jerky) and poachers, I have always had a huge passion for long range plinking, especially at things that explode, pop or fall over... :biggrin2:

Here are a few pic's of the latest toy, and a Taliban beer bottle that I de-capped at 450 yards yesterday. With a half-value wind at about 11 to 12 kph right to left, and a serious midday haze, I was quite amazed at the accuracy of the Sellier & Bellot 168gr Match factory ammo.

Any other AH hunters that enjoy long range shooting in the off season..?

but havnt done any a long while now .
nice looking ssope mate .lots of dials. what reticle does it have?
the muffler of your kids peewee 50 looks impressive aswelll mate .
does it make it quieter ?

Nice shot.

Impressive with that much mirage from the sun/heat.
The scope must have worked well.

Looks like you might just be able to back out to 1500 yards on that range without an issue.

As suppressors are totally illegal here I know nothing about them and the impact on accuracy, close or further away.
I thought they might impact accuracy at distance. This may have just disproved that.

Very nice shooting DOC, like spike says, you wont have to chase the buggers down. Reminds me of an old snipers creed, " If you run, you'll only die tired".... Words to live by.
nice doc, now you wont have to chase the poachers so hard to get closer, as you can clap them from a good distance now :biggrin2::beer:

Nice shooting Doc. How about some details on the rifle, looks like a Tikka T3? What caliber?

Nice rig..... How long did it take to get the stamp back for your can? Still waiting on mine for my SR762. Can't wait.

Nice rig and good shooting too. I like the can, very plain looking. Most of them are to "tricked out" looking for me. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly what I was thinking. Looks like an oven out there

I spent a bunch of time this summer shooting long range (particularly in the wind) while working down south on the prairie. I wish I had that kind of range here at home. Too many trees here to do any real long range shooting on a consistent basis.

..it is, Phil. T3 Varmint in 308 Win. Slightly modified, with the butt and fore-end filled with epoxy resin and the cheek riser. Also put a 20 MOA picatinny rail on to give me more distance and spacers to add to the l.o.p. Not allowed to use the bag and rest in competition, so I must still add a Harris bipod and a CTK back monopod..

Congrats that's a nice rig, and great shooting.

I have a T3 decked out with a new barrel and stock chambered in .260 that is a real tack driver as well. You will be plenty happy with that.

As for long range shooting ya, I've been shooting and competing long range for about 20 years.

This thread being a good inspiration, we decided to head out and have some fun.
A friend just got a new Savage .308 long range target rifle and wanted to see what some loads were capable of.

We went out and created a little range on the prairie. This is a dead end road with absolutely nothing behind it. We had the road blocked with the truck to keep live targets off the range. :)

I also decided to give my basic hunting rig a whirl at some distance. (.300WM with a plain old duplex Zeiss 3x9 power scope)
The Duplex crosshair covered the entire width of the black target.
Prone off a bipod.
Nothing even close to Doc's set up.

The Leica 1600B had the range at 734 yards and gave me a 113 inch estimated drop for the 300.

The temperature was nice plus 6C and a wind off the mountains that made sure the bullets continued down range and drifted a bit L to R. I figured it at about 20 to 30KMH.

The results with the 300

One shot (1st)- One hit
IMG_2054_zpsfc49b12f.jpg

I tried with some other ammo and barely kept it on the 4 x 4 foot plywood. Loads and bullets make a big difference. I have more proof. :)

One shot (2nd)- One hit on the steel square. 4x6 inch plate

3rd - One that hit the board, we know not where. I quit at this point. My powder hoard is not big enough to keep at this all day.

I grabbed his 308 rig and decided to try a little harder. It was not sighted well and the light trigger takes some real getting used to.
With some practice I could be very proficient with this rifle.

I can hit the 4X6 plate repeatedly without much effort. I quit at 3 straight.

This splatter - 9 shots below the square. Including the one that hit the rebar.
I wish I had a higher power spotting scope to see the hits.
One more piece of equipment to upgrade if I want to get serious.

This could become addicting.

No pics of the gun or scope? Wayne that's just not like you.

Nice shooting, great area for an impromptu range.

When I get my hands on it again I'll take a picture. Somedays you leave your mind.

Nice looking set-up. I just picked up a 7 SAUM as a long range/pack rifle. I need to get some more trigger time as I'm heading hunting on Feb 15. Looks like I've got a good load for it. 180 gr Berger at 2910 fps. I'll try to get a pic of the rifle and a target in the next couple of weeks. Need to verify some drops before I go hunting. Bruce

..good stuff, Bud. When the long-range bug bites, it bites you good. It won't be long before you want to ring the gong out at 1000 yards and beyond. A good bull-barrel 308, a decent scope and 155gr Palma's or 175 MK's and you'll never get bored again, especially if you have a mate or two to compete against..
