Obama administration to destroy 6-ton ivory stockpile

The Obama administration is set to pulverize 6 tons of ivory with a rock crusher in a bid to send a worldwide message that the U.S. does not accept poaching.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will crush the ivory which includes raw and carved tusks, ornaments and jewelry seized over the past 25 years -- on Nov. 14 at the national wildlife repository in Denver, according to TIME.

"We are taking an important step next week, Daniel Ashe, the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said Tuesday. "We're doing that in the hopes of raising the profile of this issue and also to try to inspire other nations around the world to deal with their stockpiles."

The ivory crushing will be America's first, but it only represents a fraction of the ivory that is available on the global market, TIME reports.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife Fauna and Flora said in 2011 illegal trade of ivory was at its highest level in two decades, fueled by demand from areas like East Asia and the involvement of criminal groups. Ivory trade generates an annual revenue of around $10 billion.

The African Conservation Act, passed by Congress in 1989, has largely banned imports and exports of ivory in the U.S., with shipments being seized at borders and ports.

Its too bad that our best and brightest (supposedly!) fail to consider the consequences of their actions. Why dont all of the countries that have stockpiles of illegal ivory flood the market with it? Put it all out there for purchase. If nothing else it would put the poachers out of business for a while as the buyers would have no need of them with ivory everywhere at cheap prices. Less value, less demand.

+1, I agree, this is just a stupid move, as usual, it accomplishes nothing. How do you win by destroying something that has value????

When finally (and finely) processed it will become the new "China White".

They can make a huge profit when the buyers start snorting it.

The carvers won't be happy though.

well i think your president is just following his fellow countrymen`s example ......only they burnt it in kenya instead of crushing it  now does that make all you people of the usa half kenyan as well? .............;):heh:

Funny Post!

Also some irony that Richard Leakey/Kuki Gallmann started the whole ivory bonfires experience while Grace and Margret Kenyatta ran possibly the largest organized ivory poaching empire the world has ever seen. Enabled by their husband/father who outlawed hunting to keep the PH's out of the pori and to appease the greens that he was doing something to save the elephants. Look at Kenya's elephant population now. All in the ancestral land of our beloved president.

Where the hell is that like button when you want it! That would lower the value of poaching and in turn slow the trade in such.

Here's a thought, perhaps use it as bait to entice the buyers. Then after they're caught and found guilty, their punishment would be to spend a year or two walking around with a tusk stuck in an orifice of the judge's choice.

That s a very stupid decision. Auctioning the ivory and giving the cash to reputable anti-poaching organizations would be the sensible thing to do.

If a drug dealer launders money into an apartment complex and is caught does the US government bulldoze the apartment complex.

Instead of being a leader, now the USA follows the lead of Kenya.....oh yea, we have a Kenyan president.

I like the way you think Phil!!!

He has resolved to do something about this problem, not something that will help in any way, but something. I'm not sure how this way of thinking has permeated our society.

:angrymob:

I don't like Obama as much as the next guy here, but what is with everyone making fun of him for his Kenyan heritage like it is something shameful to be from Kenya. Seriously, it's just going liberals more ammunition to use against us.

Assuming you dont know the story here? There has always been some who believe Obama is Kenyan BORN. If he was, he could not legally be President. Unfortunately there is no evidence that he was not born in Hawaii, at least that can be proved. Its not meant as any bad reflection on Kenya.
