We live in the U.S. we have a hunt booked in
New Zealand. Because my wife works for the airlines we fly standby. Therefore we try to have a couple options on flights. There is a good chance we might have to fly through Australia. We may also need to overnight there leaving the airport to a motel. If anyone has any info on getting a Australia rifle permit before hand I sure would appreciate it.
Regards Jeff

Victoria Police - Forms and Downloads
not sure if that will be needed mate
but that's what we need down here to get our firearms back into the country
its only just gone 6am here
at 0900 l will give a mate a call at customs and see if there is any other forms you may need .
where will you flying into down here Sydney or Melbourne would be my guess
if its Melbourne there is a motel called the holiday inn that is about the firearms friendly motel in that city directly across from tulllamarine
how many fire arms will you have and are they all registered to just one person ?
they can be wankers if you don't get it right, straight up here

Thanks! Most likely Sydney. With only 1 gun registered to me.

what airline will you be flying in on ,and then out on
if its one and the same it would proberly be no import

Firearms into and out of Australia is not only a state Police matter but also Federal. The paper work has to be seen to be believed. I have heard of Hunters coming here with the correct paper work and not having done the paperwork to get the rifle out.

Depending on the State, you will need State police documentation as well.

Go to the Australian Customs and Immigration web site for more information.

Good luck, your going to need it.

In comparison for NZ it is very easy as a visitor and it can all be done on-line or on arrival.

gday jeff l phoned my mate in customs and he gave me a number for the nsw customs and l just got the run around with a machine ,the've knocked of for the day now so l will email first thing in the morning and start ringing early on .
sorry for the delay .
like code 4 said it can be hard and they will be wankers if your paperwork isn't right .

Wow THANKS for all the help! I'm disabled so all the runaround at airports really takes it out of me. If I wasn't such a gun nut, I'd just rent one. But then all the gun smithing and tinkering to get all the performance out of a rifle you can ------- well that's half of the fun.

im hearing ya bloke
I believe its worth the headaches to take your own firearms on every hunt with you

gday jeff there going to be a bit of a hiccup mate
if you fly into new south wales (Sydney ) theres no provision or permit that the nsw police can give you to let you take your riffle with you ,out of the airport to a motel .(it will be seen as a criminal act )
I was on the phone to a girl name of liegh for 25 minutes ,trying to work out a way for you to do this .
she was polite and sympathetic towards your needs but no good
so l phoned customs again and they will need to talk to you about storing your firarm there during your stay .
will you be coming back the same way ??
they wont talk about it until the protocol is done ;
1, contact customs at information@customs.gov.au for a ccid number

2, once you have the ccid nimber ,contact deco@defence.gov.au for a client regerstation form , once you have this filled out
at the same site fill in an application to export controlled goods and technogoligy form and at the same time fill in one for you return dates if your coming back through Sydney .
then get in touch with customs again and try to get premmission to store your your firearms in their vault
mate it would be heaps easier if you went through Melbourne
or even looked at sending you gun onto new Zealand ahead of you .
with any and all of these forms try to give them a copy of your firearms regerstration, copy of your licence , and a flight intenery
and allow for atleast fifteen working days for the forms to be proccessed

good luck with it and let me know if l can help in any way
bluey

Another thing to check, does your airline carry firearms ? Do you need to get permission to carry it before you leave ?

As bluey suggested, if you can send it direct to NZ ahead of you, do that.

I'm sure you have to have somewhere safe to store it in NZ no matter what you do. Usually this is listed as your outfitter/PH.
