What to do to enter the competition, post a hunting trophy picture in this thread and include a title and some text describing the picture (species and country where taken). JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW TROPHY PICTURES DO NOT HAVE TO BE FROM AFRICA TO BE ENTERED IN THIS CONTEST. You can enter as many pictures as you would like. Pictures must be yours. We will take into consideration all aspects of the photograph itself. It's about the photograph and not the size of the trophy, basically any trophy picture can be submitted, for any kind of hunting trophy. Once the 9 finalists have been selected, it will be the members who choose the winner, so in that case I believe that some story or the journey getting there to go along with the picture could be influential.

Pictures must be posted between January 14th and March 16th, 2011 (at midnight Pacific Standard Time). At that time nine pictures will be selected as finalists by a panel of three judges, all members of AH including myself. Each judge will choose their top three pictures which will be finalists. The nine pictures selected as finalists will then be posted on March 18th, 2011 in this thread and members of AH will then be allowed to place one vote for their favorite picture from amongst the finalists (judges cannot vote). Voting by AH members will take place from March 18th until March 28th, 2011 (at noon Pacific Standard Time). The finalist with the most votes will be the winner. In the case of a tie the winner will be selected by the panel of three judges from the pictures that have tied. The winner will be announced on March 29th, 2011 in this thread.

HUNT includes:
- 8 day plains game hunt at Hartzhoogte Ranch with 6 full hunting days plus arrival and departure days

Free Hunt Official Rules

1. This competition is open to all registered members of AfricaHunting.com who are at least 18 years of age. If you are not already a registered member you can join by clicking here.

6. Prize will be made available only to the identified winner.

7. The prize is non-transferable, non-assignable, non-refundable, non-redeemable for cash and no substitute prize or substitute of animals will be offered.

8. Wounded game which is not recovered is considered as hunted.

9. Only 8 days including arrival and departure days and US$ 1,450 trophy fee credit to each hunter to go towards any plains game animals available on Hartzhoogte Ranch are redeemable per hunter. Days, trophies and/or trophy fee credits are non-transferable between the two hunters and may not be combined for the use of one hunter.

10. Except where prohibited by law, the winner by acceptance of the prize agrees that HartzView Hunting Safaris and AfricaHunting.com or those acting under its authority may use the winner's name, picture/portrait, likeness, for advertising and promotional purposes without consideration or further permission.

11. I've never been to Africa but would love to go. I had a trip in the very initial stages going for this year but life happens and it won't be coming to fruition.

I do get to pursue my love of chukar hunting. I raise a few English Setters and chase the birds around the Columbia River gorge in Central Washington. The trophy bird you see below is a HUGE adult male...you don't see birds this big very often. He was taken in Washington state's Quilomene WRA, one of the tougher places to hunt in the Lower 48. The 12-bore is from Birmingham and weighs in at a slick 6 lbs 2 oz.



One other reason this bird is such a trophy is that it was pointed (see below) by a 5-month-old pup I was bringing along at the time. I had her out a couple of times before to let her knock and chase the birds but she showed aptitude and had been progressively more cautious with each contact. This was her third covey and she pointed and held, and I *knew* I had to take a bird for her so she would "get it" as to why we were out here together. I snapped this photo, put the camera in my vest then walked up to the cliff and was lucky enough to scratch down the big guy, above, all for her to see. See pointed dead on the bird...that's why he's in such good shape.

One thing to note in this photo is the steepness of the terrain. The background is actually the bottom of the canyon some 800' below, and I'm looking down on about a 45-degree angle. The birds were on a small ledge below the pup (out of her sight) about 50' or 60' down.



Chloe turned into a good little bird dog. She stays close and is very easy to handle and obedient. About a year after these photos were taken, an older hunting buddy of mine went through a rough patch were his wife had both hips replaced and he one knee. He loved to hunt but was obviously slowing down. He was looking for a new dog but just didn't think he'd be able to keep up with the big-running dogs anymore. One day, my wife and I ran into his wife and she was doing well after the hip replacements. She told us that Bob was doing well but missing hunting.

Weh we got home that evening, I picked up the phone, called Bob and told him I'd be over in the morning. The next day, my wife, youngest daughter and I put Chloe in the rig and headed over to Bob and Cheryl's place. I took Chloe out of the crate and let her run around a bit to stretch her legs. She first went ot Cheryl, who scratched her ears and petted her. Then Bob came over and starting petting her. When it was clear both liked her, I announced, "Bob, here's you new hunting dog. She's yours." They both got teary-eyed, but somehow I think it may have felt at least as good to be the giver that day.

My first elk (hopefully not last) with a bow.....



The elk was taken in unit 4B in Coconino County, Arizona in September, 2010. The closest "town" is Forest Lakes and the next closest is Heber.

I don't know if this will count, but oh well. The impala isn't my trophy, the lady is. The impala was taken by my wife. It was her first animal taken with her first shot. It's not the largest impala ever killed but it was an old ram. The location was somewhere in the Limpopo province of South Africa, roughly 40 minutes north of Hoedspruit. The wife was "bagged" in October, 1991 in Arlington, Texas.

While the impala wasn't taken by me, it was one of the proudest moments I've ever had as a hunter.

I spoke about this when I reported on my first safari, but I'll tell the story again. After returning to Johannesburg after our photo tour of the Kruger National Park and surrounding game reserves, my wife came out to the courtyard of the Afton Guest House and told me that I needed to take a phone call. The phone call was to tell me that my safari which was to take place near Kimberly had been cancelled. There are worse things that have happened to me in life, but to say the least I was quite disappointed.

It's a long story, but it was about 6pm in the evening and it would be a long night. After speaking to my original outfitter based here in the U.S., we went to bed with no hope that I would be hunting. Well as I lay in bed that night, my outfitter was working to try and get me scheduled with someone else. After a fairly sleepless night, I got out of bed to start the effort of trying to get a flight home. A few moments later my cell phone rang and it was my outfitter. They had been able to get me rescheduled with Wayne Wagner Safaris about 15 minutes from where we were just the day before. How ironic that was.

So, we quickly arranged a flight to Hoedspruit International Airport (if you've been there, you know I'm joking) as I was too tired to even think about renting a car and driving back. We arrived in Hoedspruit at about 1pm and were met by my PH Ian. Ian was one of those people that you meet and immediately get along with. When we got to the lodge he suggested we unpack and get dressed for hunting. I was suddenly very awake and very energetic. We soon were at the rifle range to make sure the rifle was still sighted in and after a minor adjustment off we went. About an hour before sunset, we spotted 3 Nyala together making their way back up into the woods from the banks of the beautiful Olifants River. Well after about 30 minutes of my first African stalk, we were on the Nyala. After waiting for a few minutes for this the biggest of the three to present a shot, I was able to take him.

24 hours previous I was as disappointed as I could be with my safari cancelled to now about as thrilled as I could be with one of my dream animals of Africa.

Here are my best trophy photos. These were animals taken from the land that i am responsible for here in Cambridgeshire and to me, mean the most as they are evidence that years of effective, ethical deer managment will yeald strong healthy animals that and the many many early mornings/late evenings spent in the pursuit to understand and manage them. The deer with the long tusks is a chinese water deer buck and the other is a muntjac deer. Both originating from China but succesfully populated pockets of the english countryside after escaping from deer parks in the early 1900's. Both species have adapted well to the English countryside and

This was my first "real" shot, and I was SO excited!
Although I was very proud (see me smile ), this picture shall always remind me to take my time and stay calm while shooting.

This was my next aim.
My arrow went right through his heart, but what a powerful escape the bull made!
Nevertheless, he went down after 40 yards.

The first picture shows my first humble touch of the animal.
The second one just had to be taken with my bow.

Warthog at sunset, South Africa

After a very quiet afternoon in the blind (we had already called for a pick up) this warthog showed up.
Always amazing how fast and powerful these courious-looking animals are, and we had to track it with the dogs, since it was already getting dark, but found it after only a few minutes of searching.

After having spotted a major warthog the day before and letting it pass by for my friend (we had a hunting package together), he was quite angry with me.
So, when this one showed up the next day, I took it for myself.
The arrow was lost, went right through the body, but was never found in the dry grass.
But, who would complain?
Still, I would rather have liked to see my friend hunt a nice big warthog like this one.

Choco has been my hunting companion for many years. She is something of a legend at our camp for her exploits both good and bad. She is now retired and I miss hunting with her.

This is my trophy wife. We were returning from a successful late evening oribi hunt in Mozambique.
