Thanks Lori for your generous giveaway to a couple of lucky AH members, you have been such a great member of our community and have helped so many here with their travel needs.

Not that this counts but my first advice is to use a great travel agent like Lori who specializes in travel for hunters, is familiar with the unusual destinations you will be traveling to as well as the ins and outs of transiting and traveling with firearms. It'll make your trip a lot easier and save you a lot of hassles!

    Default General travel advice

    Lori,
Thank you for the great chance...

I think i might start with some general tips and hints:

    General travel advice
Make a note of where you parked your car at the airport. After a long trip, your memory will almost always fail you.
If your seat mate won’t stop talking, pretend to be asleep.
Cross-pack with a travel companion. That way, if the airline loses your luggage, you’ll still have half the clothes you need for the week.

    Health
Match each alcoholic beverage with at least two glasses of water.
Always, always check that there is a barf bag in the pocket in front of you. You might not get sick, but you never know about your seat mate.

    Other peoples’ kids
When kids are howling or staring at you from the seat in front of you, hand them some crayons and a sick bag and tell them to make a hand puppet.
Pack a small toy or a bag of snacks in your carry-on to quiet the screaming kid three rows back. Works every time and costs only pennies.
Bring dollar bills, and if the kid behind you starts kicking your seat, bribe him with money to stop. Tell him that if he can keep from kicking your seat for the remainder of the flight, he’ll get $5. Works like a charm.

    Default Comfort

    Comfort
    Wear comfortable slip-on shoes.
Unless you are traveling with children, always ask for an exit-row seat. You’ll get more legroom.
Pack your favorite hot sauce. It can turn the worst in-flight or airport meal into a culinary delight.
    Wear noise-canceling headphones.

    Entertainment
Listen to an audio book. It takes up more time than the in-flight movie and is better exercise for your imagination.
Make up lives for your fellow passengers. See that woman in the sweats, the one who looks tired but eager? She works in an office with a bullying boss, but today she’s flying to see someone she loves and trusts enough to be comfortable. The guy who’s pacing back and forth with the briefcase? He’s pitching a million-dollar client. The kid with the guitar case wearing rumpled clothes and a tie? You get the idea.

    Purchase a money belt.
I bought one that had no metal so i would not have to take it off at the airport. I left my shirt untucked to further cover up that i had it on. It eliminates some of the worry of being pick pocketed or mugged.
I have walked in the tracks of the elephant, heard the lion roar and met the buffalo on his terms. I shall never be the same.

Make sure you pack sunscreen, buy a quality product too. Because otherwise you will get burnt. Don't be afraid to reapply at lunch or any other time of the day. I apply stuff to my ears and neck and nose more than once a day....because those areas seem to burn easier.

When you get to Africa, exchange your dollars for Rand....so you have some tip money....your outfitter or PH will gladly take U.S. Dollars or Euros...but there are plenty of other places...having Rand in your pocket helps out.

Research which credit card to bring too...some have expensive fees....for using it in a foreign country or to exchange it back into Euros or Dollars. Back in the day they didn't do this as much...but now they have become really greedy and money driven...since so many people aren't paying their bills.

Always say everything with a smile at the airport....don't be rude. Everytime I see someone being unruly...bad things happen. Be polite, everyone is trying to their job, so you get to your destination as quickly as possible. Whining and complaining get you nowhere!

    Default Weight of baggage

This is very important! Make sure you bring lightweight...but sturdy baggage, every ounce counts today. If you are bringing fragile shopping accessories home....pack them in bubble wrap or cloths. If you have expensive binoculars...etc., put them on your carry on baggage...same goes for your camera or video equipment.

If you are going as a group consider bringing a "BLUE BAG" from a SCI chapter to Africa. You can bring one as a solo hunter...but it's hard enough to get through airports...carrying your baggage....plus the extra fees for baggage can add up.
