Tiger Fish
So, I am hoping to catch one or two of these interesting toothy fish while in South Africa. Any of you hunters out there who have spent a day or two getting these guys onto a hook. Any advice.... suggestions.

Jozini is the target. With the water being colder I expect they will not be biting as much. How do you get them to bite when they are in lazy mode? Very nice fish!! That is what we are looking for.

ya unfort winter wont be great. my advice is be as pro active as possible while fishing. try your best to bet some live bait ( little tilapia). hook them throught the top of the head but not too far bar that you kill the livey! also try spinning and then noral bait like sardines or even tiger fillet.
Have as many rod out or if its just one in the water all the time...try back a back up....every min counts!
once again just be pro active.....good luck and tight lines!!!!

Thanks. That will be more interesting fishing than just trolling around.
Jigging and some live bait.
Might just have to bring some Wooly Boogers along just to see how Bow River tackle will work.
Just in case, how many lines is one person allowed to have in the water? Not that I can handle more than one anyway. Just to know.

My wife and I loved fishing on Jozini. Who will you be fishing with? We did best on live tilapia and also caught catfish up to 19 pounds. There is a report I wrote called Tiger Tales about fishing Jozini in this section that has a few photos in it if you are interested. We set out several rods at a time and I don't remember there being a limit on rods. Make sure to have your camera as wildlife abounds along the shore and we saw our first elephants in Africa while there. Good luck!

Jaustin, I'll track down your article/post. Thanks.
Leeukop will be taking us out fishing. There place is along the entrance river.Likely where you got to see those elephants.
I have so much camera equipment coming along, they may ask for my work permit as customs.
Talked to Niel about Tilapia and were going to try and net some and then try our luck with those tiger fish.

"It is hard to describe a tiger fish to someone that has never seen one, but imagine a striped bass with the dentures of a piranha."
Jaustin, I have to like that description. Perfect.
Sounds like I will be entering the water where it is "infested with crocs and hippos". Should make for some good pictures.
At least your bride let you catch one! 9 lbs. that is a good fish. True sportsman with the catch and release.

I kept the measurements of my wife's fish and had a reproduction made at Zululand taxidermy in Pongola. It is the most perfect reproduction fish I have ever seen and well worth the cost. I could find nothing that even compared here in the States. If I remember right it was around 200 or 250 dollars and fit in with the rest of my shipment. You will have a blast, I hope to make it back there myself in the next year or two.

My wife wants a Tigerfish Skull mounted! Yup, surprised me too.
She likes the water and boats, so on to Jozini we go.
Zululand may just be making some more replicas.

Treat Tiger a lot like Bass....they're both predators! Try hooking your live baits through the back just behind the dorsal fin..above the spine. They swim well that way in dam type waters...they also struggle convincingly! November will have water temps way up so the fishing should be hot as they're in post spawn mode! Fish shallow..<12ft or so along drop off's! Enjoy! awesome fun! Oh, use a 14" steel wire/cable trace leader!
