A-Square Hannibal

Hey Everybody,

I was looking at dangerous game rifles online when i stumbled across the A-Square Hannibal. I noticed that its a rather heavy rifle, but then i like my rifles to have some heft to them. Just wandering if anyone on here has used one, and if so what did you think of it?

I have not seen one or have known anyone who owns a Hannibal rifle...

I wasn't able to find a hole lot of info on them other than the companys site. On A-Square's webpage they explain the rifles particulars and make it sound like the toughest rifle known to man kind and the stock is made specifically to dramatically reduce felt recoil. I'm just wandering if anybody has any information on its reliability, accuracy, and weather or not it is comfortable to handle as the stock looks rather bulky.

i believe this came up a couple of months ago that A Square's current owners have closed and/or sold the company.
if sold, unless the new owner - I think they're up to a total of three owners during their lifetime' - gets it on solid footing - the question of the Hannibal rifle is a moot point.

Yes they closed and were then bought out by sharps this last march. However I'm more interested in getting a used one as I found a small handful of them for sale online at reasonable prices (and having one made would problie be out of my budget anyway).

i would go for a used rifle from a manufacturer that is still making them. there are plenty out there, and you will have the back up and easy to get spares. it is a long time since a square were fully operational, so i would have thought you would be just creating problems for yourself. i looked at them years ago at sci , and they were a bit on the chunky/plank of wood feeling to me. each to his own though, but as i say and think most on here would agree with, is go for a rifle from a manufacturer that is still open.

If it is heft and reliability you are looking for, a CZ 550 may be the rifle for you. They are weighty enough to soak up recoil but well balanced, have a reliable controlled feed Mauser action and (at least in .375 H&H mag) have a 5 shot magazine, giving you that extra insurance for DG. I love mine (and it does not hurt that they are quite good looking and affordable).

i agree with timbear. have a look on their website CZ-USA -> Hunting & Sporting Firearms and Accessories , they give you the options, and prices for the cz550 american safari magnum are between $1200.00 for a .375 with a field grade stock, or if you want more power the .458 lott is $1300.00 with a field grade or $1700.00 with a kevlar stock. worth a look.

These guys are steering you straight, go with something you can get support for and I suspect CZ will be around for some time to come.... After you get done with the CZ site may I suggest you take a look at AHR (American Hunting Rifles) because after you have enjoyed your new CZ for a while you have a number of options from them for modification and customization.

Finally, there are today so many really good off-the-shelf rifles you might want to sample, the new Winchester Model 70 Safari Express and Ruger's M77 Hawkeye African are but two which come to mind. Both fine expamples, reliable out of the box, controlled round feed and reasonably accurate out of the box
